I think the safty neutral switch or lock is bad in the shift/throttle control box on my 1997 Evenrude 90 HP. Has anyone replaced this part and if so is it difficult to do?

taking apart the box isnt a big deal other than you have to make sure you keep the cables in place when going back together, its actually fairly straight forward if you take your time.

can I ask if you have checked for voltage at the starter solenoid when the key is in the start position??
check at the S terminal on the solenoid.
( you should have twelve volts there unless evinrude is wiring it different which I can explain in a PM if need be )
you may actually have a bad solenoid and not realize it,at least that is where I would start if you havent already.

I took my control box completely apart 4 times, and replaced this neutral i just found under my dresser 3 times on a 94 120 Johnson. Long stories, don’t ask.

It’s quite easy, I’m just a moron when it comes to mechanics.

See how my arm is curved? The old grease lost its lubiness, and actually became almost a tacky glue, new switch worked well for short period then pooped out.

I’ll be of any help I can it ya shoot some pics of your assembly. Mine was a hidden control box.

Thanks iowaboy1 and nhamm. The engine starts fine but it will start in gear which is not fine.I’ll have to open up the control and determine which switch is in it.

They are cheap, if you go through the process of removing just replace it while you’re at it.

It is not that hard. If you don’t have a repair manual, I would suggest picking one up.

if you are unsure of where to pick up a manual at,Napa,Oriellys and autozone either carry or can order for you a Seloc outboard service manual for around twenty bucks.

the schematic may actually be for a different model of control than what you have but will give you a good idea of how to go about it.

or like nhamm said,he can shoot you some pictures of how his came apart.
I will tell you he takes some dang good pictures,I have seen them for myself.

Hey now, those pics were to stay between us man shock

Let’s not forget about the videos either.

CL will have the manuals here and there, otherwise I found mine at the local marine shop. If I recall though the control box wasn’t apart of that manual, maybe I’ll go check.

The control is inside the gunnel of the Lund 1700 Angler I’m putting up for sale. It has a white rectangular plate with four screws and the shift/throttle lever. I’m waiting for a little warmer day to work on it since my detached garage is not heated.I did try to unscrew one of the screws the other day and it just turned rather than screwing out so it is probably a self tapping screw not biting in reverse. I may have to pry on the plate to put pressure on the screws to get them to back out. If I can get inside I’ll see which switch it takes and get one ordered. It could be the one like in nhamm’s picture or one or two others but I’ll recognize it.I wish I had remembered this problem before it got cold. Before someone buys this boat I want to make sure it is safe.

My manual had the control box in it. If I remember right, 2 screws go all the way through and 2 or more hold the control box together. The ones that go all the way through you will have to get a Philips and wrench on it. There was a lock washer and washer on it also. But that’s could be just how mine was installed. It’s been a long time since I had that apart so I may not be recalling it all correctly.

I am surprised it let you start in gear when it failed.

Boats dot net has some excellent schematics for everything.Remote control will be under OMC accessories.A lot of the OMC controls now have obsolete parts, had to find a part at TC outboards.

    Here’s mine.

If you’re able to just screw off the metal plate on top of the switch it comes right out. I didn’t have room in mine to get tools.

My motor is from 1985 and the control box looks different. So the information I gave earlier might not apply for you. Best of luck.
