Has anyone had one of these in their ice hole?

I was fishing one of the metro lakes tonight. Around 9:00 this giant Jurassic Park bug floated up to the surface. Mean looking little bugger.

Yep, it’s been years since I’ve seen one. Used to see them all the time.

    Polar plunge anyone?

Handle carefully and use for bait…never know, that’s what the fish may be feeding on.

Never one of those but I had a muskrat come up my hole once. Almost had to change my underwear after that.

Yup, I’ve had them swim around in my hole before, but not for a long time. I do see them in the summer from time to time. Had one at my house. Nearest water is several hundred yards away.

I had the muscrat thing once too. He came up facing away from me, and didn’t see me till he turned around. Like iacanoeguy said, we were both pretty surprised!

It is called a Water Scorpion. Mean looking buggers. I have heard it referred to as a hatchet bug or something like that too. I found one once while open water fishing and was stumped. I had to bring it in and have it identified. They are apparently quite common, though I am happy to say I have never met another one!

He/she grabbed my hemostat and I plopped it on the ice for a close inspection. It became lethargic, so I chucked it in the water. After many 8″ hot laps the boney creature capsized.

We had those coming up the hole during early ice spearing! Then had a beaver come up the hole too… Talk about scary! Later, my buddy had it come up the hole again and he hit it with the spear:P

I had a muskrat come up my hole and I was in a tent so he must have thought it was his hut. I sat real still and he sat there and combed his fur for awhile before quietly slipping back down… pretty cool. I’ve also had dogfish stick their heads up holes a few times… yuck.

    Those bugs are awesome.

I saw one of these over a decade ago in MN when I noticed a dead sunfish on the surface of the water. The bug had impaled clean through the fish.
