An example I often give is the late John McCain, maybe because he’s been in the spotlight and a more high profile veteran. The guy spent 5 1/2 years as a POW held captive by the North Vietnamese. FIVE AND A HALF YEARS. What were you, me, anyone doing 5 1/2 years ago? That’s how long he was in captivity. Had bones broken by his captors. Was given the opportunity to go home early because his captors new his dad was also a high profile veteran, and he refused each time because others had been there longer. There are many stories like this. It’s just hard to believe what some have done for this country, and I could not respect and appreciate them more.
You know, I kept thinking about my post a few hours ago and want to update.
Thank you to the families of those who served!
Why? A 10 year, multiple tour service member I knew used to say. “Don’t thank me for my service, I’m doing the job I chose and love. Thank my family who is making the sacrifices so I can do my job.”
This always struck me as the other half who are just as important.
