Happy Fall, IDO! Today is the First Day of Fall and one of my generous coworkers surprised us this morning with some Fall treats in the break room! It was just the pick-me-up I needed to see this morning after feeling quite down in the dumps yesterday evening. I’ve always loved Fall in Minnesota – cooler weather, hoodies, crunchy leaves, campfires, all the wonderful colors flooding the woods. I’m tying really hard to hold onto what I love about this time of year and not let my grief overcome me too much. But as we approach various hunting seasons and as early November looms closer, I feel the sting of my grief bubbling to the surface. So tell me, for my fellow Fall-lovers, what do you like about Fall?

Fishing. Pheasant hunting. The end of yard work. Lower humidity and fewer bugs.

Spending time on our land with my dad. He passed 11/1/07 on our land, and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. Being there helps-

Same things as you, Sharon. Plus, It’s sweater season and I have serious sweater game.

Also, fishing the river while listening to college football.

yep, yep and yep! skeeters never really bother me tho. aslo it is that much closer to my favorite holiday “thanksgiving” and my favorite fishing season which is a tie between fall and hardwater.

Fall colors are really starting to pop in the metro area! One of my neighbors posted a photo of the tree in her yard and it’s just gorgeous, especially when the sun hits it in the evenings.

Let’s see some of the colors near you!

    Yesterday:
Hauled a load of wood in the beautiful northwoods.
Walked in the woods with mama and dog.
    Shot a woodcock.
    Helped lay 700′ concrete.
Hustled home to hit last light fishing.
Caught a number of nice walleye and crappy.
    Went out for two bumps.
    Watched an entertaining football game.

Fishing and not sweeting while I do it. The colors, hot coco next to a fire on a cool day with smores, and making soup. I make 5 gallons at a time and the whole process takes 2 to 3 days. This year I finally got a little help with the leaves. Good thing he is only trying to mulch the leaves instead of cut the grass or it would look horrible. He thinks he is very cool on the rider. He woke me up at 6:30 today to tell me more leaves have fallen and he needs to get them now before there is too big of a pile.

So much I love about fall, although the peak colors are so fleeting.

From green to gold a day or two ago and could be gone in another day or two if the wind blows hard.

Sometimes I find the most contentment just sitting on my deck soaking up the view.

I would say one is football season… Not just because of football but is the one time of the year that our big family gets together every weekend for the game. Most weekends anyways.

Last weekend we had a soup cookoff and the weekend before was chili. My brothers and I get all the wives and kids together and usually do something like this for the games. Turns into quite the group (20-30 people). Its like having thanksgiving every other week.

Up in hayward last week. Of course the sun disappeared so we sat around for 5 min to pop back out but never happened, too bad, was a road of gold.

The world today moves at too fast of pace and is likely responsible for more of peoples’ ills today than anything. Having a deck or porch with a view like that Andy is worth a million pounds of medications for people to cope. Happy you have it. Not a lake, but we have a stream running right past our back yard eventually dumping into a river a couple hundred yards beyond. We spend a lot of time right now watching the river flow so to speak. Nothing on this earth is more relaxing than spending a couple hours just taking it all in with each other. Nor is there anything more rewarding. We can tell hundreds of people to slow down and enjoy what nature has handed us, few if any pay any attention. They all have excuses.

Well Tom I think part of what has slowed our pace is by virtue of our age.

I remember 20-30 years ago the restlessness and more so the energy to always “get after it”.

I know, if say we focus on fishing…many of the younger “whipper-snappers” cannot fathom sitting in a fish house waiting.

I understand, I was young too…what they don’t yet seem to understand is that they’ll get old and that a way of life they think is unimaginable can become just as enjoyable and rewarding.

Just at a far more relaxed pace, and appreciating it’s not always how many fish you catch that day, but you were thankful just to have the day to go fishing.

BTW, check the ‘What’s for Supper’ thread later this evening. I’ll post something I think you’ll appreciate Tom.

For me, Fall is the start of my favorite seasons of fishing. The fall walleye and sauger bite on my home lake, the ice season just around the corner.

Just got back from Rainy Lake on Monday and fished in snow showers last week… didnt mind a bit!

Out for a walk in the woods this morning and the colors are just amazing! I love finding a footpath than veers off a paved trail. I can’t help but go explore, not having any idea where I’ll end up (but usually still in the park anyway LOL).

LOL….I love the pictures Sharon but my yard looked like the ground there so I mowed and bagged this morning, the front anyway. I did bag about half of the back yard to mulch my garlic bed in good. Now I can make another run to waste-to-energy with the other five nice bags full. My tomatoes are still giving up ripe ones so until it freezes I guess its still fall.

Cooler weather, amazing colors and another season to share with my son. Love fall hunting, fall fishing, seriously it is too short to enjoy everything that is great about this time of year.
Plus that means high school hockey is coming!!

Tamaracks were in the process of changing up north. Unfortunately it’s a sign of the end of color. Of course the best fall color is “gray phase”.
