Lot of trailers in the parking lot of pool 2 this morning. It was 3/4 full at 730. Pretty unusual unless something is going on like duck hunting opener. Got down to the islands around spring lake a little before 8. Just in time to hear quack, quack, quack, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, on and on and on. Those guys where either dropping a lot of ducks or just going through old shells. Good part of the morning this was going on over and over again. Guys off in the distance calling followed up with shots going off. Then about mid morning camo boats started to appear on the edges of the main channel making their way back to the landing. Mud motor, Go devils, big blinds on tops, Labs facing forward enjoy the wind and I would imagine a fair amount of ducks laying in the bottom of those boats with all the shooting going on. Haven’t duck hunted in many years so very much enjoyed being down there hearing and seeing what these guys where up to. Sure added to a enjoyable morning of catching walleyes.

We stuck pretty close to the main channels of the river this morning just to try and not ruin anyone’s hunt.

i was down in Winona at about 6 Saturday morning, only to find out the parking lot was full and some trucks were parked along the road. so we put the boat in parked the truck and were off, we went to the same spot we went to on youth waterfowl day, as we were setting decoys everything erupted. a shot here a shot there, we had some guys set up behind us about 150 yards behind some trees, there were some ducks 100 yards high going over those trees and as soon as they cleared them the hunters shot. My grandpa and I just laughed at them. about a dozen times this happened and every time the duck flew away.as for us… I shot once at legal light and that was it for all 3 of us. some ducks flared some were too high and some didn’t even come within 100 yards of us. at about 830 is when the ducks seemed to stop flying so we picked up our decoys and were (to no surprise) the first boat back. not the best opener but ill take being in a boat over being at home any day.

Hot, clear and calm, not the ideal weather. Lots of ducks moving, but they were scared. Me and my boy got 6 ducks and 2 geese then it just got too hot. Back at it this morning and had our 12 by 7:55am. Very fun day. Great opener for us!!
