Hanging your fish house

I’d like to hang my Otter flipover up on the ceiling during the off season. Wondering what anyone else uses to do that. I’d like to NOT spend hundreds of dollars on a ceiling lift like the Racor, but if that’s the best option I may do it. Just looking for some other ideas. I bought a few small pulleys, but my plan didn’t work out as well as I’d hoped, though I could probably modify it and make it work, but i’m figuring there’s probably something easier out there.

    Thanks.

I store mine on a big shelf I made out of wood. Easy to make, sturdy and cheap

I made a 2×4 frame fit tight around otter sled. Eye bolts in each corner. Heavy rope from eye to eye on short ends, with loop in middle so top of loop just clears height of house. Heavy duty pulley with j hooks into rafter. I hook a rope under each loop and pull it up with 2 cumalongs. Hook loop onto j hook and remove cumalong. Actually works good

I used two of the bike lift pulley systems and it works great.

I use a couple of cheap pulleys can pull up a two man clam no problem.

These pics aren’t the best, but I used the same kayak hoist as MNFishnGuy.

One suggestion is to attach a strap connecting the 2 main straps underneath the sled. This could prevent one side from slipping off the end should one end get uneven during the lifting/lowering process.

How close can you get to bottom of rafters going up in one bay. Looking to get tight to rafters to have more ht under

I measured mine at 48″ from ceiling to bottom of sled. I also have a strap (technically a bungie) underneath to make sure they dont slip since the sled isn’t very long. Dont want it falling on my truck!

I use two bike lift pulley systems. It is not super easy to raise and lower so I can’t use it during the season. But it works great for long term storage.

    Mann4ducks,
Here are some more photos. The bottom of mine is 56” from the rafter. I have 60” clearance then to the ground. If you had shorter straps with loops on both ends, you could get a few extra inches higher on the lift. I used the stock straps.

I would note, there bike models and kayak models at Fleet Farm. I think the only difference is the additional straps for hugging the kayak whereas the bike model only has the hooks. Hooks-only would make it very tough to raise and lower.

Let me know if u need more pics.

I just put some S hooks on my corners and attach some rope to a center ring and pull it up with a gimble pulley system. Cheap and easy.

I use the same pulley system as Marty-WI. I don’t use a strap though, just put the hooks under the lip of the sled, 2 sets so there is 2 hooks on each side of the sled. Works great in my shed, by putting the hooks under the sled lip, I can get it pretty close to snug with the ceiling.

I have the Racor system, yes it’s a little expensive, but what would the cost be if your cheaper system fails and damages whatever you keep underneath? or god forbid falls on a person? I added extra safety chains on each corner anchored in the ceiling trusses. Powerdrill raises snd lowers it, so easy… I even secure an empty small Otter sled on the underside..

All these fancy lifts…. why not just build a shelf on the wall up high? Cheap and lots of room to walk under it

Its getting it up there that is the issue with a shelf…

With my lift, I can do it all myself, and load the sled up with mostly all my ice equipment, whole thing probably weighs over 250lbs all loaded up.

Here is what I have used for 4 years. Works great

I bought two from Amazon for $25 apiece. I keep the canoe in the house and one in the garage for the otter.

Which one do you use Belletaine?

Extreme Rack. I’d like to see their ad campaign! shock

I got a system that looks like what the others are posting at Menards for about $20. I did not mount it to the building, but mounted each bracket onto two 6′ sections of 2×4 so I could move them around in the garage for hanging different width things (my ceiling is open and unfinished like Marty). I have hung a 19′ canoe and bike without issue.

If you set it up this way you get a little more ground clearance. The black hanging straps also adjust shorter/raise it higher, but too tight might smoosh your sled.

Finally got around to finishing my new storage this weekend. I’ve got a 3rd stall in my garage that’s to small to put a vehicle in. So with about $30 worth of materials from Menard’s I was able to build a 4×8 platform for the fish house that has more than enough room for other things as well. I mounted it high enough that I don’t have to worry about hitting my head when I go under it and there’s more than enough clearance under it for when I do finally pull the trigger on a boat.

no matter what you hang it with, I highly suggest you add some additional safety chains with caribiner clips as a backup…materials needed are about $10 at any hardware store…cheap insurance…

I built a similar shelf in my garage about 10 years ago but have only been using it for storing lighter stuff.

What’s your method for getting your sled up there Eric?

Bribed my wife into lifting what I told her was the “lighter” end. Will be looking into a better system for next year. Probably two canoe lifts and a platform or a winch.
