Got the daughter in the boat this afternoon until the weather kicked us off. I had to ask after she caught this walleye… And She said catfish definitely fight harder than walleyes… Lol.. But she was on the Red last weekend so I kind of set her up.

    Anyway

Trolling cranks and I hear this really weird winding noise… Turn around to find my daughter was playing with the reel. No clue how she did it but WOW!
We weren’t using the handline reel, I just had in sitting in that net holder.

so how to I fix that mess?

When I shake my iPhone, I can undo what I just typed. Did you try that? grin

It doesn’t look too bad yet. Maybe sit down and try getting the loops hung back on the reel enough so that you can clip the end of the cable to something sturdy and then walk the cable off the spool to where its still fairly tight then re-reel under tension.

It looks like simply popping the spool pin out will allow you to do that and hand wind the cable back after the loops are worked out too.

I’ve had this happen several times, it’s a 2 person job!…pull more line off the spool, having one person hold the loops that are off to the side so they don’t get any smaller. Then have that person hold the reel once you’ve pulled off about 10 feet of extra wire so that it won’t try to retract. then all you have to do is feed the extra wire you pulled off back to the loops until they are all big enough to go back over the side of the spool. then bend the wire guide brushes down a little more to prevent this from happening again. If you take the pin out of the side, you can get it back on the spool also BUT you will have to rewind the tension on the internal spring and that in my opinion is a lot bigger project. I’ve done it both ways and ended up cutting some wiire off the spool when removing the pin so that the retract tension was where it needed to be. Then you will need to recrimp them thimble back onto the wire. Your mess isn’t as bad as it looks!

    That was my main concern.
    Thanks for confirming that!

I’ll round up some help one of these days and try to put humpty back together again.

Normally when this has happened to me is was caused by the reel not having enough tension on the spring. If you let the line back into the reel and it does not immediately take up any slack you may need to increase the tension. If you get slack, it stands a chance of getting over the side of the reel and you have a mess.
    Options for increasing the tension:
Cut the end off, run the line around another 5-10 times, and put the end back on.
You may be able to remove the guide/stop that the line runs through, run it around the reel 5-10 times, and put it back on. (have not tried this and cannot remember if the guide/stop can be removed)

I have had really good luck with calling the manufacturer directly when I have had issues.
