Hand washing vs a dishwasher?

So, why is everything i read favoring the dishwasher? I have one but by the time I can deal with it and load it, I can have the dishes washed in the sink.

The dishwasher seems to run along time.

I have my own well and septic, I just don’t understand the reasoning of the savings. Thanks

Might run for hours but it’s only using like 5 gallons of water for a full cycle

I can unload our dishwasher in like 2 minutes so I guess I disagree that hand washing is faster, or even close

I have two kids, a third on the way, and a wife who loves to cook. We rack up the dishes in a hurry.

If you buy a higher end washer and load it correctly, the dishes come out spotless without any pre rinsing whatsoever.

There’s no way even two people could wash all the dishes in the time it takes me to load the dishwasher (probably 2 minutes). The dishwasher also can be loaded and unloaded by my 5 year old, where her washing dishes by hand in the sink isn’t a viable chore yet with knives, nicer dishes, and quality of cleaning.

I utilize both. I have all brand new appliances, but the 3 or 4 hour wash cycle is annoying on the dishwasher. It takes 10 minutes to wash dishes. I’m a 50/50 guy i guess. Depends how I feel. I make the kids hand-wash, the woman goes back and forth between hand washing and the dishwasher.

Pretty hot topic at my house too but what it boils down to is she can wash the dishes however she wants. It drives me absolutely nuts she won’t use the dishwasher.

Our 7 year old dishwasher crapped the bed about a month ago. Would cost just as much to have a service guy come out as it would for a new one so we just have been washing by hand for a month or so. Just the wife and I so it’s no big deal. We remodeled 7 years ago so all new GE appliances in the kitchen. We have had some problem with each one of them in that seven years.

Your box store appliances are junk. I know the guy who runs the appliance store we have been fishing together. He says the green energy regulations the manufacturers have to comply with make them junk and the regulations keep changing causing redesigns of the appliances every couple years. Most of what you are paying for is engineering and retooling. The materials are junk. He tells me everyone who comes in to purchase are all about the green energy sticker on the appliance. It makes them feel they are helping the environment when in fact the landfills are overflowing with all these junk appliances.

Years ago during my first marriage I walked into the house and the dishwasher was making a horrendous noise and smelled something awful, I thought the house was going to blow up, I told her no more eating at taco bell !!!

I’ll start the dishwasher before I leave for work today. Will be done when I get home. 2 minutes to unload. Efficiency.

I do both at my house. Pots, pans, and knives by hand. Everything else goes in the DW. Run it in the evening and unload in the morning.
    The FW rarely does either.

You know why the bride’s wedding dress is white right?

So the stove and refrigerator match the dishwasher. —This was funnier when most appliances were white and not stainless steel —

We are into the 2000s, and I like technology, which has been progressing for the last 30 years.

    Thats it

My pet peeve is when the kids or missus put a barely dirty dish in the sink or dishwasher.

Like a knife and cutting board that was used for a cucumber.

Or the apple slicer, a bowl that was just used to munch on some dry cereal, a spoon used for stirring a drink, a pot used for boiling noodles or vegetables, a coffee cup, a glass of water.

And a million other things that all they need is a quick rinse and wipe right after use, not a full on hot water bubble bath or 5 hours in the dishwasher.

There’s also many times a frying pan or cookie sheet only needs a quick wipe with a paper towel too. A little sheen from oils/butter is fine to leave on cookware.

Most people could probably cut their dish “washing” in half because they’re not actually dirty.

Just because something is dishwasher safe, doesn’t mean you have to use the dishwasher. smirk I’m with the majority here in that I use both. I’m the primary cook and dishwasher in my house so sometimes it’s nice to load up a big pile of dishes in the washer and hit a few buttons and be done. But like B-man is saying for barely dirtied dishes, I just give them a quick hand wash. Knives and coated pots/pans don’t go in the dishwasher though so I always hand wash those.

    Same here^

My only pet peeve with dishwashers is when the thing is empty or partially full of dirty dishes, and people STILL leave dishes in or by the sink. I broke my wife of that habit years ago when I piled a bunch of dishes on her nightstand to make a point.

…come to think of it, I think I still have a scar from that frying pan when she found them smash

Because you can’t sell dishwasher detergent if people are not using the dishwasher…
Simply observe who is paying for the add to tell you to use the dishwasher vs hand washing.

I’m not sure who leaves the water running the whole time dishes are being hand-washed like the commercials show and say, but they are not intelligent.

We have an LG that is junk. Ive had several service calls, parts replaced and I now leave the bottom panel off because I’m constantly messing with the level adjustments. It usually take 2-3 tries to get it to start, then when it’s running it’s about a 50/50 chance it doesn’t get some kind of mis-cycle error. Whoever said the comment about “green” appliances earlier is SPOT ON – a LOT of appliances are in the landfill before 5 years of use these days. And they’re mostly plastic.

But with a couple of teenage boys in the house, it’s a losing battle keeping up with dishes. For now it’s a necessary evil but when we’re empty nesters, I see my wife and I doing the old wash/dry routine after meals.

its only the wife and I now and we do it both ways…..most everything hits the dishwasher first, depending on size and how bad the pan looks. if dishwasher is full i’ll do by hand.

i took friggin hate dirty dishes on the cupboard or in the sink. when i get into one of my full blowin cooking modes i manage to make alot of dirty dishes so dishwasher is great. it took me a while to find the dishwasher soap i like but got it pegged now.

call me anal or a tightwad but i wash, by hand, and reuse ziplock bags in the sink.

Sounds like you guys buy cheap appliances. Go get a Bosch and you won’t hand wash anything again.

Thunder….we had an issue like that once….had a tech out and he showed me something you may wanna look at.

take the screen out where the water drains, down in there, and ya gotta get down in there, there’s a sensor down there with a really small gap that likes to build up with gunk. clean that out occasionally and we’ve never had that issue since!! depends how often we run it, i check it about every 4-6 weeks!!

We hand wash things that don’t fit in the dishwasher or are large/delicate. At the cabin there is no dishwasher. My wife washes 99.9999% of the dishes.

We don’t have an automatic Dishwasher. The woman and I wash them by hand as they get dirty with some power wash and a good scrubber. Cuts down on the time and from them piling up in the sink. We have 3 kids in the house too, so it can get out of hand. If you get to them as you use them, they clean very easily and takes very little time or effort.

I am almost ashamed that I read this thread and now I am commenting….. But I am on a coffee break waiting fore more input on the other thread with all of the political intellect flying.

Hey, I might revisit your vacuum thread. Maybe time for some thing better.

Time to be more productive for me….
