Hand held gps

Planning a hunting trip out west. Looking at getting a hand held gps. Anyone have any suggestions?

Other then the obvious…get a Garmin!

I have the Dakota. I don’t use it too much but it’s nice to save on cell phone battery especially if heading out in no-mans land. I suggest the largest screen you could find. Pending internal storage capacity, find one that has card slots.

Garmin in reach… GPS/ able to txt with it.

Occasionally, the Garmin Montana is on sale at Cabelas for $349.00. I got mine at Sportsmen warehouse for a price match and an additional 5% off.

Phone with Navionics

As long as you download the area you’re going to you don’t need cell signal to use it, and its only like $15 I believe.

The phone works in some applications as mentioned by reloading the maps. A phones GPS will not track as easily and accurate as the Garmin units. If you go to remote places like I do, I urge you to invest in a good unit. All it takes is getting twisted around in snow covered limbs in dark woods…and your lost. I know, I’ve been there more than once.

Garmin Montana with onyx which is an app for your phone also. The wife shot cow elk on a ranch in CO last week. The daughter in-law had a tag for this season. My son had not been on that ranch for 12 yrs so we got on the software laid out the way in and she shot a cow this am about 1200 yards from where we were at. Great detail and invaluable tool. As we were laying out the plan at the table last night her dad ask me what we use to do before gps , answer quad maps and compass , but a lot harder. Good Luck on the hunt out west. BTW we also use them to record track in. makes it a lot easier getting back to camp or kill especially at night. The in reach is a nice safety feature. SPOT is also a good insurance to have and a piece of mind for companions or spouses

Not sure how remote you plan on getting but don’t overlook a SPOT or similar system. We carry a spot on a large lake in UT. Great assurance of getting messages out when no cell service, too many canyon walls for marine band

Anyone have any experience with the Garmin in reach? I was thinking of going with it because of the texting if need be.

Just talked with my son and he has both Montana 680t and the In reach doesn’t accept SD cards so you can’t add He liked the in reach instead of the new SPOT system. Didn’t think that the new SPOt system is getting good reviews

Not sure I need a sd card slot. I think they both come with a bunch of maps on them.

would not hurt to look at the garmin 64 with a chip you can order. Has buttons instead of touch screen.
