Hand held cell phone ban while driving

I’ve spoken with car manufacturers and they’ve all said that soon the car will jam the signal from any phone rendering it useless while in motion. I believe it will still be able to use GPS and mapquest but it will disable all other cell phone functions. I’m not sure but it might actually be a government mandate. One of those fine print ones they staple to every bill.

    Not happening.

What’s really distracting is having a 3-year old and 5-year old in the back seat. I wish someone could help me with that! rotflol

Not arguing against the concept just the precident that would be set if settled in the courts. Think “gun lobby”.
jury finds the cell phone companies liable. (Liable for a crash/crashes that kills someone

UMMM, yeah.. Think about that boys. I want to hear the responses to Sinker’s point here please. Moreover, I’d like to see how you say this is NO different from “it’s the guns that kill people and not the people that pull the triggers” Remove the phones and we won’t have distracted driving…Remove the guns and guns can’t kill people.

Cell phone signals should be terminated once the tower knows he phone is moving faster than 20 MPH. The software is out there. Just a matter of time.

    I agree completely!!!

Cell Phones are a direct replacement for 16 year old sweethearts giving her guy a hickey while driving a 57 Chevy with a bench seat and no seat belts…..different generation.

I followed a gal texting for 5-6 miles this am on the freeway….. $120 fine isn’t going to stop anyone from texting….unfortunately.

I agree that there is a bit of a generational angle with this conversation. Seems the people that hate cell phones and driving the most are of an older generation. Ive heard my fair share of stories about drinking and driving in the 60’s and 70’s including stories from bar owners who used to hand out “roadies” to people leaving the bar as a last call after bar close. All of that being said I believe cell phones are a real danger while driving! I for one want to limit the amount of cell phone use while driving but im not willing to go so far as to say we need more regulations in the form of turning service off while in a vehicle. On the flip side, at the rate that technology is being engrained into our lives I don’t see self control having much of a factor in curbing cell phone use either. Im not sure what the answer is but I get sick to my stomach when I hear about deadly accidents that boil down to something so preventable as waiting until you get out of your car to check your text messages.

Jon is right once the car is moving faster than 20mph the phone should not work-trouble is the passenger would not be able to use their phone either-OH NO! All that very important communication that would not happen! Don’t use the driving directions argument because we could go back to dedicated GPS devices, and we are talking about saving lives.

“Don’t use the driving directions argument because we could go back to dedicated GPS devices, and we are talking about saving lives.”

OK but how do you regulate this? What about exceptions/emergencies? Who is responsible for enforcing this? Phone providers? Government? Law enforcement? Why should people on a bus be without a cell phone?

Todays world relies on being able to use cell phones at all times. Imagine the impact of not being able to communicate while driving in todays times? A business man makes hundreds of decisions every day will driving. I work for a medical device company and if our salesman couldn’t use the phone while driving our business would suffer and im not talking by a few hundred bucks a year im talking millions upon millions. In turn hospitals wouldn’t be able to get devices ordered. doctors would lose valuable evaluation time which could impact a patients ability to survive. This is just one observation of one business operation. Our lives are more connected to our mobile devices than you can imagine and the implications of disabling these while in a moving vehicle is bigger than just preventing suzy Q tennie bopper from texting her boyfriend. You are right this is about saving lives, but mobile communication has played its part in saving lives as well as costing lives. Im with you that there needs to be change, but its just not that simple to say “shut it off”.

If I’m paying over $100 a month to use my phone, I will use my phone as a passenger. Plus, I need something to keep my eyes off the road while my wife is driving. Otherwise I’d have an ulcer. shock

Maybe just women should be banned from any left seat in front part of vehicle.

If cell phones need to be completely banned from all moving vehicles then let’s ban everything that could pose a distraction. Makeup, food, radios, babies, women, signs along the roadway, that booger you just can’t pull out, that hot chick driving in the car next you, bumper stickers that are too small to read!

The consequences of cutting off all communication in an ever increasing technology reliant world are endless. Doctors, police, paramedics, firefighters, all need to be able to be reached at a moments notice even if they aren’t on the clock. I have a work issued cellphone and need to be available 24/7.

I have been harassed by a guy with road rage, (and I never did anything to him!)I sure as heck wasn’t going to stop to call the police, this guy looked completely crazy, thankfully I was able to call 911 while driving and the police caught up to him.

I have been in the passenger seat when my work called, I had to talk them through fixing something, did I seriously put everyone’s life at risk?!?.

I have used hands free many times while driving, it is no more distracting than talking to the person in the passenger seat.

I try not to touch my phone while driving, it either stays in my pocket or is mounted on the dash. I still need it to communicate and occasionally have the passenger look something up on the way.

And in reality, in 10 years most people won’t even remember how to drive a car as self driving cars are the future.

My following response is NOT aimed at you personally. However, that is part of the problem, everyone considers themselves to be irreplaceable and more important than anyone else.
24/7,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, really? Is that the life you have? Are you an indentured servant? Is the world going to end when you are no longer available 24/7?

Trust me, no one individual is that important. This applies to everyone, myself included.

What is the purpose of life if you can not slow down and smell the roses?

Reading this topic on my way home from the bar has been an enjoyable way to pass the time. Calm down, I didn’t hurt anyone, but I may have run over a protected gopher tortoise.

What would you consider the only person with the qualifications and security clearances to access all sensitive and restricted areas in a facility? I don’t work my life away, 8-10 hours and done. You may think it ties me down, on the contrary, the phone allows me the freedom to get away.

Whoaaa. I think other things need to be taken care of first!! I drive for a living and the use of my phone is vital at times. I find talking with a hands free device IS much safer than just a plain phone. It’s no worse than having a conversation with a passenger, using a CB or listening to the radio. I see people with their phones up to their ears and they wont even move their heads to look around or check mirrors. With hands free I tell the phone who to call and don’t even touch the phone. If you really want to see how many people texting sit in a truck for a while. A law that needs to be passed is pets in a vehicle. countless time I see dogs on laps or bouncing around. Also the lack use of turn signals during and BEFORE the move. I could go on but I’ll stop.

Why do our legislators waist there time on such half measures?

I think the fact that this went to two pages so quickly answers that question. Same as the Sunday liquor sales! Or Muskie stocking. Strong public opinions often lead to legislative action, good or bad, like it or not. I suppose that’s how government should work? Like most, I have mixed feelings about the process.

Just sayin if one is looking at his GPS and Depth sounder while running down the lake at 30-50 MPH would that be distracted driving? Is there really any difference? Possibly less traffic but still the same. So should we outlaw the use of these devices whle driving over 20 mph? Just another view on a simular technology.

Phones are not the only distraction when driving. I look at all the new technology in vehicles as a major distraction. Everything is a touch screen. Some functions you have to go through multiple touch menus to get to. It seems to me that turning the volume or fan up takes your attention off the road as long if not longer than reading or sending a text.
I love the “Mayhem” commercial from I believe Allstate where the lady drives into the lake while looking down at her dash.

I agree with Jon on this one. Once you’re moving they should shut down. Cell phone distraction is way worse than eating french fries. Case in point….I come up to a intersection that has traffic lights. It turns yellow so I slow down and stop. There are three cars on my right, all young women and all staring intently at something in their laps. The light turns green for them, and nobody moves. No horns, nothing. Eventually the light turns yellow and then red and then it’s green for me and I’m on my way. ALL THREE OF THEM SAT THROUGH THE ENTIRE LIGHT AND NEVER KNEW IT. I’ve seen that happen with cell phone several times now. I’ve never seen that happen with French Fries.

We all managed to stumble through life without cell phones, I don’t think they’re absolutely mandatory now.

You’ve obviously never had the fries from the Nook! jester

its NOT the talking part that is the problem. Its looking to see what buttons you are pushing.
Very similar to manipulating a touch screen radio or car controls.

Unless you are chewing gum. It’s very difficult to do anything and chew gum at the same time.

Reaching for that rogue French fry at the bottom of the bag is the same as reaching and dialing that phone. Same exact thing…RR

I’d be ok with banning fast food drive-up too what with all the garbage that it creates. Put a deposit on all that carry-out crap. Ban it. Either way. But I am 100% for having cell phones get zapped while a car is in motion.

Ignition interlock is required to get your license back on any first time .16 or higher or second offense.

    It’s coming!

Interlocks have been used for years.
Still repeaters with multiple DUI’s simply drive another car.
