Let’s let the weather get a little warmer and at least 2-3′ of this snow melts before I can let any go

Some of mine are doing that too. It happens to me every year. I can’t explain what is going on, but it doesn’t seem to affect the tree. Sometimes it goes away within a week or two and sometimes they have to go through a fall/winter leaf shed. Again, it doesn’t seem to affect growth at all.

Should I be trimming the lower branches off so the trunk gets most of the growth?

I would say no. I haven’t done that. The more leaves you have the more light the tree can gather to produce more nutrients/energy for the tree. I would leave them.

I got a dozen of the apples in the ground at the farm over the weekend. I took the cream of the crop all of them between 22- 30″. Got them in tree guards and caged. Hopefully they continue to do well. I got 8 of them in this new mini orchard, and added 4 more to my small existing orchard.

Looks awesome. I think I’m killing mine. They are not growing and the leaves are brown. Maybe I should have purchased the “grow” specific bulbs. Going to plant them outside and see what happens.

Don’t give up just yet. Some of my apples lost all their leaves after turning brown, then they sent up new shoots. I am not sure why this is happening, but it doesn’t seem to kill the tree. It could very well be that the trees have outgrown the pots. With wild apples grown from seed they want to send down a long tap root. They do this so when they are actually wild they can beat the competition to water. If they are grown to long in a pot and outgrow it they may go into a sort of hibernation. Grafted trees have a trait of growing a wide thick root ball because they have ample water all the time and no competition. This is why a nursery can have them for several years.

Good luck, I hope they come back strong for you!
