No rain, bad news

I got back to the farm this weekend, haven’t been there since mid July. The lack of rain has destroyed my plots. Corn is 7-8′ tall stalks but dried up with absolutely no cobs Chopped it down, tilled and planted brassica in 2 of the plots hoping to get it in before the predicted storm Saturday. Got about 3 drops of rain from that storm I can see on the trail cams the clover was a foot tall and nice and green, then slowly faded to brown. Beans are alright, but with everything else dried up they have been severly over browsed. Filled the water holes, waterred the crap out of the apple trees and hoping for rain soon. The good news is they were hammering the mineral stations and I had over 2000 pics of deer on cams. Lots of fawn pics which is great news. 3 decent bucks on cam, but nothing huge. I put cams on both water holes now and that should show if there are any big guys around. Kind of a bummer weekend, but we are getting closer to archery opener so spirits are high!!

I’m amazed how we have had some good rains out in SD, but the ground was so dry also. I planted some winter rye and a couple apple trees. Luckily we have a well/hydrant close and Dad is going to water the stuff for me. Also planted some radishes even though it’s probably way too late. Figured what the heck, it’s worth a try.

I forgot to take pics. Our corn is 8 foot tall with great ears this year. It was a hot muggy booger out there late last week. Some of the corn is starting to dent and turn. I think the locals will be cutting silage any day now.
