It was excellent 2 weeks ago, and it should only get better until freeze up. Wish I could make another trip up this weekend as well. You’ll have a blast! Don’t forget the camera….

I had two buddies that were up there last week and they had received a few inches of rain. They caught only two fish all day.

Has anyone used apple trees for deer? Thinking about planting 5 or 6 apple trees together for deer for a little extra food and attractant for the deer. Any thoughts?

Apple tree’s are great. Also look into Pear tree’s – the fruit don’t rot when it hits the ground and the deer like them just as much.

Just remember to fence off the tree(s) for a couple of years to keep all the critters away from them.

Yes, I have started probably 30-40 apples and pears from seed for the deer over the last 3 years. No fruit just yet, but the deer hammer the apples we already have and I have heard they will walk over apples to get to pears.

Definitely tube the trunk of the tree and cage them to keep mice and rabbits away from the trunk and deer from over browsing the branches and rubbing them.

If you want faster results, you might be better off buying 4-6 trees that will produce the 2nd year. The cost is $35 (late in the year) to $100 (early in the year). Also depends on what type and quality. Remember to plant at least 2 because they need one another to pollinate.

I had a wild plum tree a few years back and watched raccoons demolish it 2 nights in a row. The tree hasn’t been the same since.

I talked to the dealer, and got varieties that will produce at different times in the fall so I keep the deer coming(hopefully). This is what he suggested, and made sense to me. Trees are only a couple years old so no fruit yet, but they are flowering this year! I put 5ft welded wire around mine, and split drain tile tubes around the base to keep the mice off. Have had no dead loss to this point. Good Luck!

I would be careful about buying trees from the local big box stores(walmart ect) some of the trees they sell if not all are not rated for northern states. The label on the tree should give you a rating.
