What to plant

Finally was able to save a picture of the deer stand location. Here is the basic picture. As you can see there is a current stand there now. That blew over this summer. I want to put a new one where the red dot is because at the current location when they come into the left field and walk north they look right into the stand. I will add another picture with my food plot thoughts.

Right now the two big field are just crp/hay fields. My buddy thought his dad may plant alfalfa this spring.

My first thought would be to clean up this runway and plant something here. It is about 7-10 yards wide and 80-100 long.

I would disc that up and plant some clover, beans or brassica. They will graze through it nice and slow moving from field to field giving a good shot op. Either that or put corn in the plot which will give you extra screening for stand access and also be a good late season draw for the deer. I would also move the stand south and east of where it is now in the woods just to give it some cover and give you a way to access it without being seen. Place it on the north west corner of that block of woods. The reason they look right into the stand where it is at is they can see you get into it from a long ways away. There is no way to access the stand in the wide open without being seen. Just my opinion.

What about Frigid Forage big n beasty. I have not used it but have seen dozens of mature deer eat their last meal of Big n Beasty on Midwest Whitetail all season long over the years.

I would put something different in the strip between the fields like you were thinking.

Right now that strip is the only place I was going to plant something as my buddies dad needs to plant his fields to feed his cattle. The other thought would be to mow the crp north of where the existing stand is to make a bigger plot. My question is how big should this plot be so the deer don’t destroy it before it has had a chance to grow. The cows aren’t an issue here as it is out of their fence.

Depends on your deer density, but I would say 2 acres plus is a nice size. If you could make like an “L” shaped plot utilizing the spot you already have marked, then you will have a nice inside corner for another stand location. We have one 4 acre plot and no matter what I plant in there it is big enough to get the deer through until very late winter or spring with fairly high deer density. All my other plots are around 1 acre and will sustain the deer until late november.
