I have a spot that I would like to plant next year that is about 1/2 acre inside the wood line on 160 acre parcel. we already have 40 acres of corn and soybeans and would like to do something like antler king products or something. I have not done a soil test at all but it is sandy ground. what would you guys suggest what has worked best for you.

Bob may have a recommendation on something that is more hearty for the sandy conditions. I have an area that is sandy/rocky within one of my plots and it hasn’t done well.

I have done corn and beans for 8 years now. 3 years ago I started a couple clover plots. They have been absolute magnets to the deer and I have made a new one every year. I still plant a lot of corn and beans for this time of year, but clover is a good food source from early spring right through the end of October and even longer when it stays mild. I have lots of pics of deer feeding on my clover last week still.

We cut some of our CRP this summer and the deer have been loving the alfalfa that is easy access now. Even as late as 10 days ago when I was back hunting.

Josh, A couple of questions… of the 40 acres of corn and soybeans how much is left standing for the wildlife?
second question. How much sunlight does this 1/2 acre piece get on a normal day? third question, is this plot a hunting plot or will it be planted for herd health? if you are going to hunt it will it be early or late season? One more thing… how are the deer numbers in your area? sorry for all of the questions but they are very important when choosing the “magic Bean”

The 40 acres are all left standing through the winter
The 1/2 acre will be hunted over for the rifle season only and gets good late morning to mid afternoon sunlight
and deer numbers are fair. we drove the land on the last day and took 1 deer but there were probably 15 in the property that were seen.

Wow thats alot of standing corn and soybeans I would go with Brassicas the 1st year and then rotate to winter wheat or oats every other year. The Brassicas are about the only thing That will compete with the corn/soybean mix
