I have an established clover plot that is getting some weed competition this year. Has anyone tried a light gly(1oz per gallon) treatment to kill off some weed competition? Can use a grass killer as there are some broadleaf weed in the plot also. I have heard this works with clover being somewhat gly resistant, but hate to nuke a good plot.

I have used this for years. I try and spray 10 gals of water per acre.with 1 qt of glysophate.the clover will look sick for about 30 days but all grass will be dead. the clover will come back stronger than ever. I also seed 1/2 rate of clover at the same time.

Is it possible to spray instead of mow clover for similar results throughout the summer?

Clover matures several times during the growing season. when clover reaches maturity it becomes less palatable to the deer. Mowing becomes a very crucial part of maintaining a good clover plot. I normally mow 3 times per season. (mine was mowed yesterday)

Thanks Bob, I assume you are using 41% gly correct? Appreciate the help.

Bob – Have you tried this on new clover? We have a 1 acre clover/chic plot that has a ton of grass in it. The clover is only 5-6 weeks old.

I have not heard of much success with Arrest or Poast. Any other ideas?

Round-up or Arrow 2EC? Any suggestions?

(the cold spell we had early seemed to have curbed the weeds from the sounds of everybodies plots. I think our original kill-off was much less effective then past years.)

I’d be curious about this too. I have heard not to use gly on clover new than 3 years old.

I wait until the second year for a gly. treatment. If these were spring planted this year you will be forced to mow frequently and use a 9-23-30 fertilizer in hopes of strengthening the clover. I have had very little success with Poast Plus. some have had good luck with it… I just haven’t had good luck with it

In all Honesty I won’t plant any clover unless it is a fall plot with a cover crop like oats to reduce the weed competition. the only other exception would be frost seeding into a clean weed free seedbed.
