Great re-cap Scott! Really shows how important time on the water is and having the right equipment. Gotta get one of those Birds!

Got this in an email today… has anybody else heard about this Arm & Hammer mineral lick that is suppose to be the bomb ? There was a picture attached so I included it too…

They are the CRAZE lately on all of the hunting forums for attractant sites (no real antler ‘growing’ aids just attractant).. The ONLY ingredient in the A&H wash is “Sodium Carbonate” – Mix this with salt and the deer go wild..

    So- Here is the def:
    From Wikipedia:

Sodium carbonate is a food additive used as an acidity regulator, anti-caking agent, raising agent and stabilizer. It is one of the components of kansui, a solution of alkaline salts used to give ramen noodles their characteristic flavor and texture. Sodium carbonate is also used in the production of sherbet powder. The cooling and fizzing sensation results from the endothermic reaction between sodium carbonate and a weak acid, commonly citric acid, releasing carbon dioxide gas, which occurs when the sherbet is moistened by saliva.

I haven’t done it, just got it in an email..never heard of it before. I would guess it is like putting out those flavored licks… no benefit to the deer really, just an attractant, which benefits the hunter The email just said it was being talked about on all kinds of hunting forums… not here I guess !!!

It is a popular lick and can even be found on the QDMA website. There are many mixes for it. Many mix it with di-cal, magnesium oxide and other cattle supplements.

Its make-up is sodium carbonate which is a natural earth supplement found in many other licks. A quick trip to fleet farm for a 50lb bag of trace mineral for $6 and to Wallyworld for A&H Superwash for $4 will make you a cheap lick that does work or just add it to your existing mineral mix.

It is not the same as Baking Soda though.
