Planting Oats and Corn?

So this year I am planning on putting some plots in for the deer to utilize during the late season and into the winter. My question is which crop would you go with-corn or oats? I have heard of guys using both…this area is in Pierce County and all area farmers get their crops off before the snow flies (I know this because I am related to them ) Anyway, which would you plant? Hoping to possibly use this as a kill plot too. There are crops all around this area like I mentioned, but the fields all get chisel plowed before winter which equals no food for the deer. Any help would be appreciated! Most of the crops in the area is corn and alfalfa…

As far as late season hunting and over winter crop it will be very hard to top corn. So to answer your question I would say corn.

With that being said, if you are doing this plot Do-It-Yourself with minimal equipment it will be much harder to grow corn that produces than it would be to grow oats. I am assuming that you will be able to get left over seed from your farming relatives so price probably isn’t your main concern? Have you considered soybeans? I would say beans rival corn for late season hunting and over winter crop here in S.Minn. The benefits to beans is they are much easier to grow as they can be broadcast seeded and planted much more closely than corn, and will be more likely to produce a crop with minimal equipment than corn. Just throwing that idea out there for ya, hope this helped

I have all the equipment needed to plant as much as I could ever want My ganndpa will let me use the equipment. The soybean idea is appealing. This is being planted on a sidehill, but not too steep. I may put the corn on the flat on top and soybeans on the hill…I’ll see how it goes. As far as when to plant, what would be a good time for soybeans? Obviously corn would be right around now…any help?

Bob – If you are looking for the bean plants to stay greener longer into the fall (whether it is regular beans or forage variety beans) and don’t care much about bean production, how long might you wait to plant?

    Thanks!

If you know you will have the moisture I would plant in july for regular ag beans to be green at frost. My problem has been that i don’t get the moisture needed in july. I went with a long season soybean from southern Iowa this year in hopes of having both good production and green at 1st frost.
