I’d like to try to get some type of food source into out deer woods this year. being that it is a potlatch lease we are rather limited as to what we can do. We do have a rather long (Over a 3/4 of a mile)logging road running thru the center of the land leading back to the deer shack. I’m thinking we could cut the edges back from the road 3 or 4 feet on each side – and then spray it to kill the weeds. Then till it up and plant something. My ?’s is what to plant and when. I have no idea of the quality of soil. I was thinking of some type of clover. The area would receive rather low sunlight due to the surronding trees. Not the greatest – but hopefully better than nothing. Thanks in advance for any idea’s

There are several options, But a white clover will grow pretty good in a sunlight starved area. like the one that you speak of maybe mix just a little bit of chicory in to sweeten the pot

It will for sure be better to have some sort of food over nothing. I would get it tilled asap and spray the new weeds that come up 2-3 weeks after at least twice. One downside I see is having to walk up and down your food source often? I would plant the road because it’s already clear and try to find or trim some other trails to get in and out of the woods. Good luck, have fun and be careful… It’s just as addictive as hunting One last thing to consider before buying seed is what season you would like the food to be the most attractive to deer?
