I have a couple of spots in my clover plot that has some weeds and grasses. This will be my second year with the clover plot and last year I tried to keep the weeds and grasses under control by mowing. I was hesitant to hit the plot with any type of herbicide last year, but this year I will hit it with some diluted roundup. My question is, how long do I wait this spring to hit the plot with roundup?

I would wait until early to mid may. when all of the cool season grasses are up and growing. use about 1 qt per acre of round up and then add clover at 1/2 rate at the same time. the grasses will die and shade the clover seed. you will see quite allot of clover that shrivels up but it will come back stronger than ever I would caution anyone doing this not to do it in a drought Keep in mind that fertilizing with a fertilizer with little or no Nitrogen will also help the clover out compete the grasses that need nitrogen to grow

If the grasses are the big issue, have you considered spraying a grass herbicide that won’t harm the clover? If you use a lesser rate of a glyphosate (roundup) you could still run the risk of having some kill in your plot.
I spray the grasses in my clover/brassica plots if needed with clethodim (commonly marketed as Select Max, Intesity and others) Here is a link to a label for Intensity http://www.cdms.net/LDat/ld7LN003.pdf

It is labeled for clover and a wide array of other plants. I think I paid about $85 for the last gallon that I bought.

Of course if you have broadleaf weeds too, this won’t kill them.
I don’t see anything wrong with the roundup method, but didn’t know if you were aware of this option or not.
