After many long hours of looking at maps of my farm and also from watching deer movement during last years deer season “RUT” And a long walk today I have Identified several areas that need improvement, the 1st being bedding enhancement via hinge cutting this includes “securing” those areas (Kinda like walking out of your bedroom in your house, you still want cover even after you walk out of your bedroom)
The second is edge feathering, Hinge cutting field edges or planting cover really helps secure your movement when traveling to and from your stands and by placing your hinge cuts properly you can control the way your deer move about your property and where they enter your food plots.
Hinge cutting when done properly can be the single most important improvement that you can do to hold mature Bucks on your property year round Hinge cutting can be dangerous so common sense and the proper gear should be used

Thanks for the reminder! Myself and probably others could use a hinge cutting 101 course. Location, size, location and what time of year will the cutting do the best to provide cover? How far from heavy human traffic like roads, paths and food plots? Habitat improvement! I love it! Especially when it only costs hard work and a little discipline!

I will try and write something up in the next day or 2 One thing I will promise… if your woods looks nice like a park you will never hold mature deer year round. By the use of tsi you can make your woods hold more big deer than you thought possible I spent 15 or more years believing that food plots would keep mature bucks on my property It takes cover, food and no pressure to hold those 3.5 or older bucks on your property.

Good post Bob. My dad and I just did some deer directing hinge cuts yesterday. I had two different stand locations in mind and we made some lines of hingecuts to force the movement into bowrange of the trees I want to set in. Essentially we were doing a form of TSI too as the trees that we dropped have little to no timber value/wildlife value, most being elm, boxelder, and red maple.
