Congrats Tim. Spending quality time in the boat with your daughter is what it’s all about. I can relate to just HOW much fun it is to share time in the boat with the young ones. Their thurst for knowledge is unreal, and wathcing them learn is a hoot. So, she had not asked to drive Daddy’s boat yet? It’s comming. I don’t get to drive at all anymore when my boy is out with me, he runs the show I love the pic’s, they are priceless.

Tom Lester Was Kind enough to do the research and share his forage soybean source with me. I just contacted Tom’s Supplier and talked with him at great length about a Late season soybean that stays green well into the fall and is generally taller and has bigger leaves than normal
I am going to try these this year and wanted to know if any of The IDO members would be interested? They will run about $45.00 a bag. He will have to order them so if you are interested respond here or send me a pm. Or you can buy direct from him for the same price. I am very excited to try these at Half the price of other forage soybeans it’s worth a try Thanks again Tom

If you are broadcasting I would go up to 40# per acre. If you are using a corn planter with 30 -38 ” rows with a corn plate you will use much less but will still get good results. I really like broadcasting about 15-20 # of soybeans then plant corn at 38″ rows you get the best of both worlds

Is there any yeild to these beans grain wise? I’m disapointed the more and more I talk to guys who plant eagle beans up north the more I hear that the beans produced rarly get bigger than buck shot I may be interest in 6 bags, Tom is the source near Buffalo?

QDMA- I believe I have said this on a prior post but I got decent pod development with the eagle seed this year; certainly enough to last through this years ‘extended late season pattern.’

I have planted a lot of different forage beans, ag beans,lab-lab, and eagle seed through my years. They all have their advantages. You want 50 bushel an acre the only thing you will achieve this with is ag beans. You want alot less beans and some tonnage production its lab-lab. You want some lengthened green, good tonnage, and alright pods its forage beans. You want emmense tonnage, green leaves as late as possible and alright to decent pods production its eagle seed. In my opinion it will be very hard to find a consistent quantified number for bushels on anything other than ag beans and every year differs. I’m sure you know this info, just figured I’d throw out my findings on the whole spectrum of seeds and my expectations of each differing seed. I have rarely come across an instance that does not fall into these broad based points.

Again, just figured I’d throw out how I how classify all these seeds when considering differing varieties.

He is located by cabalas in Medford mn. These beans are an ag variety soybean that is grown in southern Iowa. The seed salesman said they grow taller and are more like a 120 day corn than an 85 day corn meaning that they will stay green much later in the fall. They are not sold as a forage bean. they just have allot of the same characteristics as a forage bean. He said to expect good seed production from these beans. I don’t think they will produce the tonnage of lab lab or eagle but seem to be a good middle ground plant that stays green longer and still produces good yield. I don’t believe these have “runners” like the eagle seed so they probably won’t be as browse resistant as the eagle seed.
Just to make myself clear… I have never planted these beans… I am only going by what the seed salesman said.
I will say this, he is a farmer that sells seed and seems very knowledgeable about the seed that he sells

I dont need huge pod production but it would be nice. the DEALER who I was gonna get the eagle beans through also told me to expect little to no production of the pods. I have a couple area where pod production isnt that inportant because the is plenty of ag beans in the plot already. But in my smaller plots a jactent to the ag feilds I want some production as they will remove the feild at harvest! Thanks for the info Fowler, you a wealth of info!!!

Sorry I didnt get back sooner, I just got back from The Ohio Deer & Turkey Expo. Like Bob said he lives by the Medford Outlet Center. If you are looking to plant a forage bean, I think the best way to do this is to plant forage beans from your stand out half way for early season. Then plant regular ag beans the rest of the field. This way you get the forage and pod production and can give the deer what they want all season. He does sell ag beans so you can take care of everything at once. The best part he doesnt try to make alot of $ from each bag.
