Last week on my way home from NE, I happened to sit next to a guy from ND who is a regional sales manager for a large Feed/Fertilizer company. Ironically his company just bought out a good friend back home recently.

Anyway, I’m trying to pick his brain on the short flight. He suggested some friends of his are having outstanding luck with winter Canola. He claimed it’s quite frost resistant and the deer seem to love it.

Any of you plot experts have any experience with the winter version of Canola?

    Thanks!!

I did trial a brassica mix that had canola in it. It grew taller than the normal turnips and rape. kinda looked like giant mustard. The deer and turkeys seemed to like it. I could be wrong but I think it’s just a hi-bred brassica.

From what I can find, it’s some sort of hybrid Rape seed, but not finding much info yet.

Given the amount of available forage our deer in SD have for food, I’ve decided we are going to stick with our corn & millette mixed plots(20 acres). We are also going to put in 3 acres of beans.

Our 3 acre kill plot will just be kept black during the summer. About the end of July, we are going to plant some Brassica, Winter Canola, Winter Rye and some Winter Wheat.

As the harvest in SD is in full swing, I’m hoping my kill plot is lush and green and drawing deer from miles around. It’s a theory at this point, but I’ve got nothing to lose other than a few dollars on seed.

I was talking with a seed dealer today about this sounds like winter canola has a tendancy not to bolt as much as standard canola leading me to believe its gonna be better in a plot, but also its a by annual plant meaning your gonna have to kill it in the spring before it does bolt and go to seed. I also heard tell that it was roundup ready???? If so it will be playing a huge part in my new plots as well a my”neglecta plots”I’m on the hunt for some seeds now for a test plots or 3

From what I’ve learned, you definitely have to kill it off in the spring much like the brassicas. If you have any luck finding seeds, let me know. I’ll do the same.
