I bought a small parcel in a large wooded area with very limited farm ground near it. I put in a small amount of food plot this last year which got POUNDED. I would like to put in some corn next year, but wonder if the deer would destroy it before it got to maturity? Would they leave it until ears were on? Thoughts?

How big of an area would you be able to plant?

How big is your deer herd in the area – If to large I’d be more than willing to help you out with that

Deer numbers are not high in the area. I could get maybe as much as an acre cleared and in. It would take me clearing the area as it is woods that was logged a few years ago. I only bought about 29 acres total so don’t want to clear to much. Should I just stick with soybeans early, and put in a chickory, brassica turnip mix in late summer? It will give the tons of food, and early browsing won’t destroy it.

I do think that doing a double crop would work for you. I would probably go with eagle Forage soybeans as early as you can get them in. Then in early august I would Put at least 1/2 of it into winter rye. The winter rye will really help build your nitrogen levels and also improve the overall condition of your soil. By the way the deer are really hammering my winter rye in northern mn. “It looks like a barnyard”
