One of my kill plots I have planted in winter oats and some turnips. The oats came in great and are about 2 feet tall right now. The deer are pounding my clover and the turnip leaves right now, but I do not see where they are browsing on the oats. My question is when can I expect to see the deer feeding on the oats?

Sorry to dissapoint you Butt once they are more than about 10″tall they are not very palatable. I plant mine as late as I can so that they are eating young tender sprouts about 4-6″ tall. In southern mn that would be about the last weekend in august. in northern mn. I plant them in early august.

Oh well, that’s the way it goes I guess. This year was going to be a learning experience anyhow. Used Whitetail Institute product Pure Attraction and planted per their instructions, the only thing they didn’t mention was how to maintain it. Said I could expect the plants to reach 24″ tall. That they did. Next year I have some new ideas that I got from this sight that I want to try.

If the stems are hollow it’s to late, if they still look like grass you may have some success if you don’t mow them to short. It is possible to seed winter rye into the oats and then mow and hope for some rain and more warm weather.
