Can I still make mineral sites this late?

I’m headed to SD shortly. I’d like to get a couple mineral sites started on my dad’s place. We won’t be hunting this ground this fall, so I’m not worried about the “can’t hunt over a mineral site” rule SD has.

I’m also gonna try to work the ground for a few fall food plots. Can’t wait to get back there!!

Yes you can really start them any time as long as the ground is not frozen. Clear away the grass in about a 4 ft circle, till the top 4to6 inches of top soil, add 3/4 of the mineral into the site and mix with the loosened 4to6inches of topsoil and then add the last 1/4 of the bag to the top of the site. I find that 1 site is good for about 80acres of 50/50 woods/ag land mix. Also more secluded areas are the ticket as long as they see good deer movement. Good luck!

I have deer hit my mineral sites all year long. So I would agree you can start them anytime But it will be easier if the ground isn’t froze

There are no good deer in SD… I had an encounter with a 150 class deer last year. I still dream about meeting him again, only this time I’ll have a tag in my pocket.

I had this guy at 8 yards, no tag and armed with my binocs only. I can’t wait to get home and get started on improving the ground.

Talked to dad last night, he sounds really excited. He’s got all the equipment, I just need to make time to get back there more to help him out. This forum is such a great resource!!
