Thanks to this food plot forum, learned quite a bit before planting my food plots. Here are a few pic’s before I started preparing the area. My good friend who owns the land had this pond dug for me last November.

This area here is just off where the pond is and will be used for the fall planting. Rented a push brush mower to clear the area. Should have rented the pull behind mower for the ATV, but managed with what I had.

These pictures are just after I finished seeding with Imperial Clover. In the background you might see white 5 gallon buckets. These are used to water a couple apple trees that I planted. Not pictured is a logging road that I seeded with a special blend of rye grass and clovers specifically designed for logging roads with minimum sun light. Looking forward to see what is on the camera over the next month or so. The mineral sights are getting hit hard, but have not seen any good bucks yet sprouting horns.
Hoping that this food source will start pulling one or two in.

Come August I will plant the rest of the plot with some rape, turnips and some winter wheat. Thinking about planting some pumpkins too, any advice as to what to plant for the fall crop would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like a sweet setup, I hope all the hard work pays off. I will be seeding this friday and have been getting my butt kicked from day 1 but the rest should go smoothly. Thanks for sharing!

That looks great! You have one heckuva good friend there!

I was down yesterday helping my uncle put in a couple plots on his land between Durand and Urne. That farming thing is kind of fun!!

Wow – that is a good friend to dig a pond for you. Can’t tell if the apple trees are protected but if not the deer will eat the buds and stems off. Even if they have nice green food plots they are browsers at heart and can’t resist the sweet buds of an apple tree. Looks like a lot of hard work – looking forward to hearing about the benefits!

Keep us updated on the whole project. I’m interested in seeing how the logging road planting goes. I’d like to try to get some type of food source into our hunting area if possible and we have a nice big logging road running thru the land that I’ve thought about planting something on. Let me know how yours works out. Thanks.

Nice! very nice!!!! Water is gold when it comes to keeping the deer on your property. In some cases i even use The large husky hauler tubs made by Banks outdoors from Cannon Falls to use as pond substitutes. they will drink from them daily.

Thats exactly right Bob. You can take a husky hauler sled and bury it an area that has water run when it rains or an area that you can get water to easy and the deer will come to it like cattle to their water trough!
