Just a reminder that now is a good time to get the grasses out of our clover plots. I use 3 methods. the 1st is fertilize with 9-23-30 this will give the clover what it needs but will not give the grass much food. the second is to use poast plus with oil.( i have not had very good luck with this but it does help some) my third and favorite is to use 2 pints per acre of round up. add 1/2 rate of clover seed at the same time. Clover is round up ready resistant. it will shrivel up butt will come back healthy and the grass that have died will shade the young clover seedlings. make sure and do this just before a forcast for rain. this fall you will have the best looking clover plot in the neighborhood.

if you are using the round up at 2 pints to the acre it will kill your other broad leaves along with the grass. if you only want to kill the broad leaves used 2-4DB make sure it has the B on it or you will smoke the clover. One other thing i do is plant durana clover the deer love it it is invasive so your plots don’t get smaller every year and is sold as round up ready. for my alflafa i plant Falcata, very small stems and is also invasive. it’s the only thing i have thats green during the summer drought.

    Bob,
How long have you planted falcata? Are you happy with it? Have you had to mow it or does it stay short? I’ve been toying with the idea of putting in a plot of it but don’t want to have to buy a haybine

This is my third year with the falcata, I only have 2- 1/2 acre test plots and have only had to mow once a year. the deer keep it mowed down pretty good. I found that it stayed green all last summer! I was reluctant to plant alfalfa for many years but i noticed that the deer in my area spent alot of time in the surrounding alfalfa fields and i gave in and planted the falcata. it is knowen to have very thin stems and very palatable to the deer. I am adding 2 more acres this fall with a 10% mixture of durana clover and oats as a nurse crop. i will plant this the last week of oct. and will have the oats as a good fall plot and then next spring the falcata will take over.

Update on spraying clover with round up. The first pic, shows a very poor stand of clover 2 weeks after spraying with round up and seeding with durana clover at 3 lbs per acre. If you look close at the second picture you can see a spot in the middle that i missed with round up. the grasses are still very thick in that area, the third picture was taken today about 6 weeks after the round up treatment, as you can see it went from a very poor stand of clover that was full of grass to an acceptable stand of clover that is now a viable food source.
