Food Plot Equipment Help

  • #204342

    Hey guys,

Looking for a litle help here… I have a small food plot about 1/10th of an acre in size that I can’t get any equipment to besides the stuff that I can carry to it.

So my question is, does anyone know what kind of tool I can use that will provide similar results to what a disc would do to the soil? Also looking to replicate what a cultipacker or roller would accomplish as well?

    Any ideas?

How about a small garden roto-tiller?? They have pretty small ones now that are about as portable as a weed wacker.

I used to use a Hudson Sprayer with round up to kill the weeds, then a weed wacker to cut down existing dead weeds after I sprayed it. I would Rake the plot clean with a Leaf Rake, then use steel garden Rake to till up the soil, use my Scotts lawn fertilizer broadcaster to broadcast seeds and fertilizer and then I used my feet as a Cultipacker on my small plots when I started out.

A small Landscaping tamper might work also for a culitpacker???

    Hope this helps

Cut a 6 foot (straight!) section from a good sized downed tree if available and roll it along the ground to act as a cultipacker.

Rototiller or rake/shovel I suppose are your tilling options.

I have used a lawn Areator with good success. the best to use is the core type areator. 2 or three passes at a good rate of speed will make it look like you used a disc on it.

I do have an old areator that you can borrow. and you can use an atv or a lawn mower to drive and pack your seeds for a good seed to soil contact. I do use delta ag seed coat on all of my deep woods plots and seem to have had better growth when i use this seed coating

    Thanks for the ideas guys.

I have an old garden tiller that I been hauling back there the last couple years, so I’ll probably try and make do with this again. My only problem is that my plot seems to get alot of grass in it and it’s difficult to get it all out of the plot with a garden tiller. I’ve tried to rake it as well, but this gets to be quite a chore. Any ideas what may work better for getting the grasses out??

And as far as packing the seed in, I think the idea of using a large log will work out pretty well.

    Thanks again for the help!

This is what I do currently for seeds that need minimal depth. I either use the 4 wheeler or the tractor and run over the entire plot with the tires.

I use an old section of chain link fence with a couple of cement blocks on there pulled behind the wheeler. seems to work pretty well.
