this was my 1st big burn! Cavinrock switchgrass. some of the best whitetail habitat that i have! I am supposed to burn it every 3 years. 1st pic is my back burn. second pic is after the burn. I can’t believe all the deer beds i found while walking while i was starting the fire!

Nice work! Looks like a pretty hot fire. I burnt a piece of bottom ground last week too. It hasn’t been farmed in 15 years and wanted to prep it for some soy’s this year.

Gobbler, most county agencies should be able to give you a permit without any fee….at least that is the way it works in my neck of the woods.

Log on to the dnr website and find your local dnr headquarters. They will issue you a permit on line free of charge, as long as it’s more than 1 acre.

Thanks for sharing Bob! What are some of the reasons to burn it every 3 years?

My goal is to have all warm season grasses in these fields. the problem i have is that the cool season weeds germinate at a much colder ground temp. They will take over the plots if not delt with. I wait untill there is about 2-3″ of weed growth Then burn it as hot as possible to stunt or kill the weeds. the sun shine on the black ground will quickly warm the soil to start the switchgrass growing, before the weeds take over again. One of the problems we had this year was the burning ban. we had to burn later than i would have liked to and ended up killing some hen pheasants that i assume were nesting. Can anybody here tell me when pheasants start to lay eggs?
    Thanks, Bob

They will start to drop eggs in early to mid April. Usually these eggs are laid randomly or in another birds nest, and a lower percentage are fertile. Then they will nest in late April to early May.

Was just watching two roosters duke it out this weekend, so breeding is still occuring.
