Gunflint Trail ice conditions

I am supposed to be going on my annual trout fishing trip the 26th-30th. Just wondering if anyone knows how the ice is looking on the lakes on the trail? Mainly Gunflint lake. Thanks

Hello, I haven’t had a chance to make it along the trail this year. However, I was on the ice in the mcgregor area this past Sunday. Fishing on honeycombed ice wasn’t much fun and the ice was getting pretty rotten. Hopefully with the cold(er) weather coming in the ice will last a little longer up there.

Ice was fading really fast in NW Wi last Sat. I vowed it was my last time. I cant imagine safe ice in two weeks anywhere. However when you look at the 10 day forecast for Ely the temps hint that it may last. I think you are going to have to make the call much closer to the trip.

Out on Seagull last week I saw anywhere from 18″ to 12″ in spots with current.

I just got back from my cabin on Gunflint and there is 10-12 inches of good ice and the top 2 inches in some spots is bad but you will be just fine for snowmobile or wheeler traffic. BTW we caught fish we caught 12 lakers the first day and 17 the next day. Our best bait was a 1/8 oz buckshot in a firetiger color. Also I had luck on a uv green rippin rap, a fire tiger 3/4 oz Fireball jig with a stinger. Also on the first day we did well on the I fish pros with ciscos 5 feet below the ice most of the fish came out of 50-55 FOW.
Also all the fish were 20-29 good luck.
