It is surprising that I still have ice on Leech lake. I thought that we would be ice free really early this year but we are on pace with last year right now. A streak of warm days or rain could change that. A lot of the smaller local lakes are open and are producing some very good crappie catches for people that are out chasing them. I know they are up shallow in some of my favorite little lakes in the area. Lots of anglers are catching them right from shore right now. I am guessing another week of ice up here since the main basin is still 90% ice covered and you could still get on to Walker bay as of yesterday if you were willing to walk out. Here are some pictures of the open water in front of the resort this morning. I know I am looking forward to the crappies moving into the harbor in about 2 weeks.
