A few of us on this forum have a planned Grouse hunt outing planned for Friday October 13th at Mille Lacs Wildlife Management Area. In the current societal spirit of “inclusiveness” we in all sincerity would like to invite anyone else on this forum if they wish to participate. This is an open invitation. Understandably this is a late notice and that a Friday may be difficult for some to be available. Regardless this is a serious post/invitation and not another condescending thread being started to fuel more animosity amongst the IDO “natives”.
Anyone sincerely interested, this will be an enjoyable GTG. Half day hunt, and then refreshments after! toast

I would come but I think I’d get Dick Cheney’d by those “natives.”

Seriously though, have fun. Nice friendly gesture.

Thanks for extending the invite. I am already on a Grouse trip far away that day and weekend or I would consider it.

I’ve never been to the ML WMA before. I’m going to be in the ML area on Saturday and Sunday and might think about taking the dog out and see if we can kick up a grouse or two. Any suggestions on where to enter this WMA for grouse? I am looking at the MN DNR website and they dont have maps of the trails nor parking areas. It looks like a pretty large WMA and lots of water for waterfowl. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here is one, kind of small but it does show access roads, parking spots within and hiking/hunting trails.

Great post Andy! I’ll check with the better half but would otherwise love to come up. May have used up all my hunting trips for the next few weeks though

Andy, can we use lead shot for grouse there?

Thanks Andy. Man, that place is really big! Is the “Olson Field” in the middle private land or upland conifers? Hard to tell from the map legend.

I wondered the same thing since new laws and regulations seem to be added annually. I looked in the “Reg” booklet a awhile back and this is all I could find relative.
    “Use of lead shot
    • No person may take ducks, geese, mergansers, coots, sandhill cranes or gallinules
with lead shot or while having lead shot in possession.
    • Lead shot may be used statewide for hunting other small game in accordance
with firearms restrictions in this booklet, except in federal Wildlife Refuges and
    Waterfowl Production Areas.”

MLWMA is not a Federal Wildlife refuge or a designated Waterfowl Production area either…as far as I know. So…? Get the lead out?

It looks like it is colored white on the map. The map key legend does designate white as private land. Look at the satellite view from Google map. It looks like crop fields. Very strange place for them, rather remote.

Bring steel if you want…lead should be okay, unless you planned on hunting gallinules. grin

Guess you didn’t hear, Deb D ran off with JD and they’re living somewhere down in Tennessee.
I already invited her cousin though, she’ll show us a thing or two!
