Was at the farm on Saturday and I saw grouse everywhere. 12 in one bunch and misc doubles and singles.

Considering these sightings were not from walking the woods, but just while driving trails and getting work done, I’m impressed.

    Anyone else.noticing good numbers?

Over here in NE SD I talked to a farmer that said he saw more grouse this year cutting hay than he ever has. Could be a good year for us too.

Is that sharptail, Jeff? I wish we had more sharptail, near my farm in NE MN we have 2 flocks on the cattle ranch next door, but we don’t hunt them in hopes of protecting them and having the numbers increase. Unfortunately, they seem to stay about the same every year, the habitat must be marginal and can’t support more.

I don’t make any serious efforts to hunt ruffed grouse until after the leaves start really dropping. To me, the “must do” hunt is right around Columbus Day. If it’s not too PC to say “Columbus Day”…

I have seen more grouse on our farm this year than the last 10 at least. Great to see. We haven’t hunted them at allin the last 10 years trying to get population up, but this year I may have to slip one or two out of stock. I absolutely love the taste of grouse and it is by far my wife’s favorite wild game.

In the long run they will disappear again without you hunting them at all so dont let that stop you from taking a few every year.
