    Hi guys,

I am heading up to Grindstone Lake in Hayward WI to fish this Saturday. I’m taking a group that doesn’t fish much. We all live 2.5 hours away. So I likely will fish this lake once or twice a year. We’d like to catch just enough for a meal, and have a fun day. We are a “catch and consume” group. We are not about stocking the freezer. I can go to cub foods for that. I don’t know much about the lake, other than studying maps. Does anyone have any tips? Where to find Crappies in the morning and daytime hours. Where to possibly set up in the evening for walleyes? Tackle suggestions? The lake is crystal clear and deep. Message me in private, and I’ll gladly share some of Western WI tips with you in return. I fish the Star Prairie area often. I live in River Falls WI.

Thanks very much for anything any of you have to offer.

Search the basins right now deep for crappies

Grindstone is VERY deep. It does have many basins, but most are 45 ft or deeper. There are a few that are 25-35 ft deep. Focus on those right?

I live in Hayward, and while I’ve never fished Grindstone for crappies myself, it isn’t something I hear about anybody doing either. I have heard rumors of it growing a few big crappies, but I’m not sure if the number there is worth targeting. You’re probably more likely to catch walleyes there, and if lucky may get enough to feed a couple people.

If you want a couple other nearby options for crappies let me know. If you do hit it for crappies I hope you do well. I’m sure the crappies in there could be big. I might look around center bar and see what you find. Possibly also the basins in general on that end of the lake, between center bar and some of the bigger flats in that area.

    Good luck!

Hey there Tucker. Thanks for the info. I sent you private message about our adventure. Really appreciate your offer to help us out. My dad is now 70. He’s in pretty good shape, and loves tagging along. He took me out when I was too young to recall. He started all this. Now it’s me who takes him out and teaches him new things. Full circle right? I hope my son will do the same for me when I’m aging. ) Join us Sat if you like. We’re a fun group. Kev

Interested to hear how you do also. I’d like to work the Hayward area more next season of open water. Tom Boley has me very interested in this area, plus I have an uncle-in-law that still lives up that way and is a retired guide.

I’m just south of River Falls (about 12 miles, on Big River) neighbor. Maybe hook up some time, 6 poles are better than 3 waytogo
