Can it be that, that many people out there are clueless on how to prevent gridlock?

December 5, 2017 at 8:54 am #1732891If it makes any of you feel better, I drive 50.4 miles to work each day. I leave at 4 AM and today it took me 5 extra minutes.
Grid lock is for the cities. I don’t do the cities. Unless I get discounted Wild tickets.

December 5, 2017 at 10:41 am #1732936Days like this make me appreciate my commute opposite of the flow of traffic. Had a car or two a 1/2 mile ahead of me this morning, that’s about the extent of my traffic. I was nervous I would catch up and have to pass them, but I was safe.
December 5, 2017 at 10:46 am #1732940The closure of 694 in Oakdale must really be adding to the misery?
December 5, 2017 at 11:40 am #1732957The Wakota Bridge is part of my daily commute, and is absolutely terrible every time there is one drop of rain, or one flake of snow.
Today was a nightmare, from one end of the bridge to the other took about 25 minutes ……. I think the 11 years of construction it took to build the stupid thing were better than today’s journey
December 5, 2017 at 12:40 pm #1732969Why anyone would subject themselves to the commuting of a city/suburbs is beyond me.
~260 work days per year X ~80 minutes per day (40 each way) = 347 hours per year driving to or from work
AND
347 hours X ~35 years on the job = 506 days, or ~1.5 years of your life in traffic JUST for work
Life is too short.
December 5, 2017 at 1:04 pm #1732974My normal 45 minute drive took me 2 hours and 15 minutes today.
Here’s what contributed :
Last night – good solid rain
Overnight – temps dropped into the 20’s and added 1-2″ of snow.
Extreme winds apparently kept salt from cleanly falling out of snowplows
Sinkhole on 694 has that shut downFirst snow of season is always bad but we had the perfect storm of factors in the east metro.
ugh
December 5, 2017 at 1:33 pm #1732983Took 65 minutes to go from Roseville to Bloomington at 6 A.M. It was something.

Posts: 299December 5, 2017 at 1:49 pm #1732991Bummer guys my office is in my house so the traffic going down stairs to my office was terible almost tripped on some lint! HA HA. Really we have some troubles here in the northland as well. We drive 30-50 miles each way to work for alot of people up here and it may not be grid lock but it still takes extra time. I really like the really small cars that are so fuel effecient all summer and looking at us guys in big trucks like we are poluting the whole world then it turns to winter and their looks now turn to puppy dog eyes, saying please help us.
December 5, 2017 at 2:02 pm #1732997Normally I take the bus into downtown for work but today I had a doctor appointment. Took 2 1/2 hours for what would have been 30-40 minutes. Thankfully the Dr still held my appointment.
December 5, 2017 at 2:37 pm #1733005I never saw a DOT vehicle on 94 on the way in. Traffic sucked and was stop and go the entire way in. I never saw any accidents. There was a semi that was stuck in the middle lane of 94 between Woodbury Drive and Radio Drive. It couldn’t make it up the hill. Wait, there aren’t any hills. Regardless, the semi burnt a path through the ice.

Posts: 3343December 5, 2017 at 3:23 pm #1733020Ahhh the good ol metro rush hour grind…. That was one of the main reasons I decided I couldn’t stick around the cities after I graduated college. I moved back up north and haven’t regretted it for a second. Traffic for me these days is having to drive 54 in a 55. Even a “good” day in the Twin Cities traffic grind is a nightmare.

Absolutely, 35E south and 36 have been nightmares this week. I’ve been totally sinkholed.

I don’t drive a small car, but I get joy out of the inverse when the dudes in big trucks are in the ditch because ‘they are in a truck and have 4WD’ as if that means they get perfect traction no matter the conditions. Meanwhile, the dudes in small cars are just fine because they are actually driving at an2 appropriate speed.
I would love to see a study done on cars in the ditch. I would not be surprised if a higher percentage of AWD/4WD vehicles go in the ditch than their 2WD counterparts.
Of course, a small car can’t help anyone if they are in the ditch, so don’t take this as me bashing trucks or anything. But guys who drive trucks are far from immune from stupid driving.

I will agree with you there a vehicle is only as good as its driver, my point was more that the small cars are great in the summer but when the weather turns bad they suffer. When you live up here and they do not plow the roads as well and as often and in the urban areas we all suffer but some less than others. I was trying to have some fun but evedently it was taken out of context again. sorry to offend you!

I’ve been working my way – away from traffic and the people that go with it my whole life. If my wife would allow it my next move would be to Canada eh……it is nice having the problem of avoiding deer vs. Cars and people.
December 5, 2017 at 5:54 pm #1733087While sometimes it does seem that Phil can get offended more often than some others’ here, I didn’t take his post as such. He makes a good point as well as you did. I witnessed first hand both behaviors of which each of you described today.
Years ago I might have taken offense if someone said I drive like an old man. Now that I am one, I take it as a compliment. This old man has seen countless vehicles pass me in winter conditions, only for me to pass them later down the road while they’re spun out in the ditch.pool2fool
InactiveSt. Paul, MNPosts: 1709December 5, 2017 at 6:21 pm #1733091My 24 minute commute from St Paul to Mpls was 29 minutes today and only because I chose to take it a little more slowly on the icy roads.
