Greeen Lake Walleye’s

Just got back today from fishing Green Lake last night. Hit my first spot and caught a 10 inch walleye and about a 15 inch smallie in about 30 minutes. Then I proceeded over to the East side of the lake to a spot I’ve fished for years in the fall. It’s a little pocket about an acre in size running along side a sand break. The depth peaks out at about 26 ft. I was using a regular red colored ball jig 3/8 oz tipped with fat heads. I dropped the jig in about 20 ft and right away landed a 18 inch smallie. About 3 minutes later I pulled up another nice smallie around 19 inches. I was graphing many more fish down there so I stayed patient. Once again landed a 15 inch smallie on the next drop. Like most guy’s after walleye’s on Green they would have left by now. I switched over to a black jig and hooked the fat head in the tale this time. Then I dropped it down and continued jigging with no luck. Later I switched to a chartuse jig head and figured I dead stick it on the bottom. Within 2 minutes I landed my first walleye, after that I got them going. Now it was around 6pm and by 8pm I had landed over 20 walleyes all between 14-24 inches. Nothing but smallies in Green Lake ?????????

Sounds fun! There’s a decent night trolling bite on Green in the fall, correct?

Nice report. I have been on the lake a half dozen times this summer with marginal success. The best night was 10 walleyes caught and released between two of us. I really need to try more jigging out there. I know some people that do very well with a jig and minnow.
I trolled the Oct. full moon out there last year and it was a bust for walleyes. I think we had 15-20 smallies and one 17″ walleye. Still had a blast catching all those fish.

what most of the natives to the lake are unhappy about is the evening to night bite from shore is gone….for walleyes that is. not every one wants to fish that deep….you could say we were spoiled and would like to have that back…….now with the regs changing back to pre bass protection there is a chance it might return…..but with most of the resort people gone and with them there fisherman bass I think will survive the open unresticked open season. but only time will tell.

ive had good luck casting husky jerks in 1-5 ft of water for walleye in the fall. nothing like the 30 fish nights at mille lacs but usually able to put 5-10 fish in the boat.

Those kind of nights are tough to do now. If you cast anything that resembles a minnow, you will get a ton of bass. I like catching bass, but not after dark while I am looking for walleyes. Green is a great fishing lake and that is why I love it. Unfortunately, I like to eat fish when I am at the cabin and that is hard to do sometimes. I’m sorry to see the bass regs go, but in the end it should balance the lake out again.

Actually lifting the ban on the bass in my eye’s is only going to strengthen the population. If anything right now it is overpopulated with bass and has stunted growth of the large bass in the lake. Plus in reopening it back up few people today even keep bass so that’s really not going to affect numbers very much and in my eyes only improve the bass fishing. To me it’s almost laughable that the walleye fishermen around the area are the one’s that really pushed for this ban to be lifted early, but in reality I think it’s only going to strethen the bass in the lake. Plus I know those walleye fisherman were not thinking about all of the bass tournaments that will now be on the lake. So now they will have to deal with bass boats ripping by them at 70 mph every weekend. For a fact the Silverado Pro bass tour, Anglers Elite Pro bass tour, and Anglers Choice are all holding tournaments on the lake in 06. Thank you walleye fisherman I’m going to make some cash this summer fishing for your enemy. To balance the lake out again walleye fisherman need to start realizing that catch and release is the key to success of a species in a lake.
