Unions have created more to the inflation the last year than anything. Unions are good for Union workers and that’s it.

    Please explain? coffee

Our contracts are negotiated years at a time, and were negotiated 3 years ago. Pretty darn sure Brandon printing money at a record rate has nothing to do with it???

how do you figure? Our contract is negotiated 3 years at a time. So it was done way before any of this inflation problem.

Please explain how that has anything to do with inflation

Sharon you are not to old to get into a trade..

Thanks Mike, but I’m older than I look! LOL smash

For now I’m happy going to work with various friends to see what they do. It’s fun to learn and it’s amazing just how many different kinds of trade jobs there are!

yea coletrain……some people are just gonna hate..and KP just hates on everything people post!!!! look at all his posts! whistling

they just dont get it, its called COLLECTIVE bargaining for a reason……because BOTH parties, management AND the members “collectively” agreed on all the terms and conditions of the contract negotiated!!!

with that being said, the Boilermakers apprenticeship program really struggles, first off getting people in the door…then actually keeping them the 4 years through the program!!!! its not uncommon to get 25 people signed up, they lose 3-4 before the first week of class is over and by the time the first year is up they have half that many !!!

Wow…look at what I stumbled into a few weeks ago thinking I’d be just learning about fishing! This site is so much more! As a recently retired union electrician, the statement that unions are good for union workers and that’s it is simply not true. I started out non union just out of trade school and worked my first 6 or so years that way. Our wages/benefits always followed what the union electricians made. Admittedly, we came up less than union people made but their negotiations “trickled” down to the non union folks so our packages rose as theirs did when they renewed their agreements. I have a close friend who owns his own non union electrical shop and he agrees that unions benefit all when it comes to workers wages, benefits, safety and rights. Think what you want, arguing unions, religion and politics is the way of the world but can we at least educate ourselves on all sides of the topic before we throw baseless opinions out there?

After a few years of being out of the union I went and worked for a non union company for a few years. It was no different as far as work conditions or pay, benefits may have been a bit less but I didnt research it too much. After that I was happy to not have to pay to be a part of an orginization I may or may not have wanted to join in the first place. There is a current worker shortage or so I hear, crazy to think there may be guys that would want to work hard and do the job maybe just a few years but dont think its worth their while to sign up for a union and pay to do so.Hats off to everyone union or nonunion that chose a trade or career and will or have stuck with it their whole lives, thats not something I have been able to do nor could ever imagine doing.

If I could go back 15-20 years i’d join a union for sure. I’ve been remodeling homes for a small company for 22 years now, and while they treat me well, and I have a lot of nice benefits, its nothing compared to what I could make in the union. I’m still young enough (39) to make the jump, but I really like what i’m doing and where i’m doing it, and at some point i’ll likely just go off on my own. But yea, I SHOULD have joined the union when I first started in construction. I’d be well on my way to a nice pension and early retirement. I’ll absolutely be showing my children the benefits of union work when they reach working age.

Seems like a decent opportunity for someone who wants a few paid months off every winter. Like others have said, it is hard finding people who want work. There are many job opportunities making great money and working all year for it.

Unions had their time and place… some are still relevant today, some have been outpaced and are just burdensome now to already hard working people. I was once in the Union, no thanks, it kept my wages the same as the lazy guy doing 1/4 what I was. I was constantly being told to slow down, do less… etc. Nope, not me. Their moto was the Union works so I don’t have to… they would say this out loud. Just my experience.

Yeah, I’ve never seen any of that. Sounds like a employer issue. Not union issue. Lazy people get laid off and go from company to company. They don’t get protection. We have never been told to slow down. Construction only has so much time. Some one is still paying for the work being performed, your explanation seems like the money for a job is from a magical never ending place. If that was the moto how would work get finished. And how could you get more contracts. The Union helps you when a employer doesn’t. Seen it many times. I’m no big Union guy. I just enjoy my many benefits and top pay scale. I have a few non Union trade buddies and they don’t do near as good. That’s my reasoning for staying Union.

If union companies operated the same way as your story they would all be out of business. Yea sure there are lazy a$$ people here and there but that comes with anywhere you work at. The lazy people are weeded out and never advance.

I started in the laborers union. Then switched to the cement masons union. Goods and bads of unions. Laborers union only paid OT after 10 hrs or 40. Cement masons pay after 8 everyday. The health insurance to me is not good. I never use it, but it’s a headache every year with my wife’s coverage, and prescription s. Laborers wasn’t any good either imo. Good wages, but all the work is in the shitties.

i hear that philosophy alot in faculties that pay out a gain share or profit sharing check. those type of guys thinks there gods gift to the company usually!!!

and IF the company would actually use the work rules they have in place… they most certainly can weed out the deadbeats.

i’ve read and negotiated alot of collective bargaining agreements…NONE of them have any language that says they cant pay you more. the agreement spells out the minimum thats it!!!

Since this has turned into a pro vs anti union argument. Will it matter to everyone when Amazon becomes 100% unionized and your items cost more?

This was the teamsters Union, it was in a manufacturing plant. The harder I worked, the more behind the dept in front of us fell behind and the process after backed up… The Union fought tooth and nail for the deadbeats. Of course I would love to get $2500 worth of sunglasses, but like any other “free stuff” your paying for it one way or another. How do people feel about the teachers Union ? Again, I see it more as a “protection program” than a working force. That’s just me

I’m guessing this highway heavy ? My ot is after 8 or after 315pm or before 5 am. Many weeks I have 35 hours ot and 20 regular. But it may be because I’m a specialty concrete cutter. But building and trades ot is after 8 on a single day or any time after 40. Being the concrete cutter running a wire and wall saw I get paid well over journey worker. But it’s hard dirty work. When it comes to insurance the benefits are awesome. Prescription name brands are aphid 80 percent and knock offs are 100.
Again I’m not a huge union guy but it pays and treats me very well as well for the company I work for. And I’ve had a company truck over 12 years.

41 years in a Union , are they perfect heck no ! But i am damn glad we had one . Unions bring up the quality of life that private business would other wise deny . Was never told to slow down , exactly the opposite ! Lazy employees got weeded out early on , because they impacted you directly . Its still up to the company to do their job in regards to bad employees . Its not the Unions job to discipline bad employees .

Just to be clear it’s not 2500 worth of sunglasses we get. It’s what I had left in my vision. Package and if it wasn’t going to be used toward eye glasses I can use them toward sun glasses. All I had to do was walk in to total eye care pick the few I wanted and give them my insurance card. It was the end of the year and needed no vision work done so I took advantage of that benefit. All I had to do was pay my 30 dollar deductible. It’s not free, I work my ass off for it. Would be foolish to let it go unused.and yes I’m paying for it in my working hours. I’ve been at maxed bank hours for insurance for 13 years. Why would one not use it.
As far as teachers unions I have no idea, I’m not In one nor would I want to go to school to make that little. Also would hate to be a carpenter right now. There benefit packages have taken a big hit and the Pension pays for it. Laborers are doing great, and looks like it will continue to do so. How about the nurses Union, saved many people’s jobs over the course of our pandemic. There are pros and cons to it all. And for me the pros way out weigh the cons

My amazon prime membership for this year is already paid, however after their recent 5.5% price hike “due to inflation” my auto renewal is now cancelled and we won’t be using them anymore. So I guess no, it doesn’t matter to me whether they unionize or not.

Bearcat, people get upset when they realize they could use their vision program for prescription sunglasses but have never thought to do so. Picking up my 3rd pair of Maui Jim’s today, complements of my vision insurance. My regular glasses get covered by the company outside of insurance so prescription shades are what I get.

That’s an awesome opportunity BMan, thanks for posting. While my wife and I are in professional non-union/trade settings, I definitely want my sons to explore the opportunities there, is 4 too young to apprentice? He’s got a strong back, but may exceed your break schedule for snacks. rotflol

I’m sorry you are like that. I’ll also let you in on the fact if I go to the doc for a check up and a dental visit withing the same year I get a free pair of red wing boots or a carhart jacket. The perks are real.

Doesn’t bother me at all… I enjoy free stuff as much as the next guy. It was insinuated that they are prescription sunglasses… everybody (I thought) knew that they can get prescribed sunglasses and they will be covered, just like if you are required to wear steel toes, there is things to take advantage of also. I will stop posting in here as you seem to get offended by my posts. One last cool
