greasing your bearings

So I finally got around to replacing the axle on my boat trailer today (went surprisingly smooth, once the old one was out it was visible to the naked eye it was bent). The new axle is an ez lube type just like the old one but did not come with grease zerks (and I forgot to pick some up beforehand). So it got me thinking, I have a brand new set of bearing buddies sitting in the basement (think they were a gift), what is everyone’s take, go bearing buddies or get zerks and stick with the ‘factory’ system? I never had an issue with the ez system, I remove/inspect/repack or replace the bearings every spring and keep an eye on them throughout the season. I like that with that you pump grease in from the back forward (ensuring you fill it), and I’m not really crazy about the idea of intentionally adding seal blowing pressure into the system. But then my dad has had them on his since new(6 years) and he, along with probably a lot of other people haven’t had issues with them. I do like that the buddies seem to me to seal the outer face of the hub better than the ones with the removable rubber plug and I can still add grease if needed without removing the cover like I would have to with solid covers.

So what IDO’s opinion, or am I just overthinking this and am fine either way?

for me,I like the ez lube system better as you can actually pump out a lot of the old grease and any water that may have gotten in.
I check the bearings for play and smoothness twice a year and repack every two years as I dont get to put on a lot of miles every year.

the bearing buddies are fine, the biggest problems I have seen with them over the years is using the wrong type of seal and they will blow out under pressure.
that and after they are installed and removed a couple of times they dont fit as tight in the bore anymore and can come out going down the road.
the bearing buddies also tend to leak around the cap after a while.

so will the rubber cap on ez lube axles if they get old and split.
that said,I use to use bearing buddies on every trailer I ever owned until the ez lube axles came out and never had any problems.
like anything else, bearings and seals are a maintenance item and need checked regularly regardless of what you use.

Stick with the factory set-up.Just get some extra rubber seals and end caps. Also make sure you use double-lip seals.
