I have been thinking of using my Non touch HDS-7 for ice fishing. Mainly I would be using this for the chart’s. I was going to put a RAM mount on my ATV so I know where were going. Right now I use my iPhone with charts. Has anyone had a problem with there units freezing up, because of the cold? Can the unit get hurt, because of the cold? Im talking -10 and above temps.

Go for it! I used my helix5 on my sled handlebars this winter in -30 temps without issue.

I haven’t had any issues with my HDS7 at all. Although, I’m not so sure about the ram mount. Some are useless. May want to get some input on the best mount for an atv.

I have the RAM motorcycle handlebar mount on my sled. It’s rock solid. Of course then it turns ever time you do but doesn’t bother me.

I use my HB597 with a RAM mount on my ATV with no issues regarding the mounting or usage when cold. The only issue I had was related to the power cord. The cord plugs into the 12V outlet and if its a rough ride it will jiggle loose once in a while (causing the HB597 to shut off)

Are you guys running them off a separate battery or the Atv battery?

I’ve ran my HB798 for years on a ram on my atv and the only issue I have had is one tournament the first day it rained and the unit didn’t fully dry out before the next day and the power button froze down the next morning. I run mine off of the atv battery but the key has to be on so that I won’t forget and at the end of the day have to rope start my machine.

My atv has a 12 volt accessory plug that I use the accessory power cable from lowrance to power my hds7. Works flawless. I would take it in at night but never have issues with cold etc. RAM handlebar mount is rock solid.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I have some wiring to do.

I have been using my x26 for years on both my sled and atv. I use a Johnny ray mount due to the weight of the x26. I think that the Johnny ray mount has a lower center of gravity and the unit doesn’t get jostled around. I directly wired from the battery with a fuse, this way your unit font shut off when you turn the key off. I used 1/4″ slot/tab connections, this solved my problem of the plug “jiggling” loose while traveling across rough terrain. I did add a piece of plywood under the dash of the snowmobile for added support. I hope this helps

for those wanting to do this with a Lowrance Mark/Elite DSI series unit, I have a brand new cigarette power cord for those units in the classifieds section..

I ran a Lowrance Elite 5 HDI all winter on my wheeler and never had an issue with the cold. I have it hooked up to a 12volt battery that sits perfectly in between the bar on my ATV rack. Having it connected to a separate battery gives me peace of mind, as I rely on my wheeler to start every time in tournaments.
