Late Night Crankin’

The full moon bite on Pokegama is heating up. I would like to see the water temps a little cooler than 74 degrees but the walleyes didn’t seem to mind last night. Took a couple guys out last night crankin’ we caught 13 walleyes, 2 northernss, and about 30 rock bass (the Rock Bass were biting on anything you threw down) in about 4 hours. Now it wasn’t spectacular by any means, but as the moon began to peak we caught four walleyes on the last pass of the night. I wish we could have a made a couple more passes but the two guys I took out had the “Sleepies” and I had to convince to make the last pass.

The biggest eye was a 25 1/2 on the first pass of the night, there were a few in the mid 20’s and all the rest were nice eaters. The hot colors last night were firetiger and perch. We started trolling the breaks from 12 to 15 and ended up catching the majority of our fish in 5 to 7 FOW.

Given the last pass we caught 4 fish in about 15 minutes with moon at its peak in 5 FOW, I would say the bite is best right now from 11:30 pm to 3:00 am.

Nice! I’m planning on getting out there tomorrow night with my boys. Holiday weekend, and a full moon, so I’m guessing there will be a few boats out there.

I’m the guy in the 1650 Lund Explorer w/a 50HP Honda. Maybe see you out there.

Sweet! What styles/names of baits were you using Mike?

Salmo Stings #6, Original Raps F11, Shallow Shad #5, Shallow Shad #7, Salmo Hornets #5 and #4. We tried a varieity of colors every walleye but one was caught on Perch , fire tiger, or green tiger colors. The closer the lure to the bottom we were constantly adusting line length depending on the contours and targeted depth. We did run into a few higher weed beds that slowed down the bite a litte because we had triples on weeds several times.

All in all it was a decent bite. I am taking tomorrow off and tonight I am going to try to fish the peak moon hours from about 11:00 to three. I am taking a few guys out tonight but when they want to go in I am going back out to see how late the bite runs. I suspect it will go until sun up with but the best bite should be between 1 and 3.

I won’t be out tomorrow heading to the cabin to set my deer stands. Its a family tradition so the full moon this weekend couldn’t have come at a worse time for my fishing schedule. I didn’t really see a lot of boats last night. We concentrated our fishing around the islands and by sugar bay. I thought I would have seen a lot more boats but then again they could have been down the Wendigo side or down Sherry’s Arm. The boats I did see did a lot of moving around last night from spot to spot but we stayed pretty consistent just trolling the flats until we picked up a fish then turned around and went back through the same area. We usually picked up at least two fish in the same general spot. If you are out on Sunday Night I will probably see you out there.

Been out crankin’ the last two nigth following the lunar schedule, which meant going out fishing from 2 til 6. Picked up a few walleyes each night biggest was this chunky 25″. (BTW the orange lindy gloves are a finger saver when taking raps out of angry walleyes)

Water Temps have cooled below 70 degrees finally, so on my way back to the landing I checked a few reefs and humps and the fish are back on the tops. Marked quite a few BIG ‘eyes hanging out up top. Rest assure I will be heading out this afternoon to see if they are hungry. again.

Dude, I so wish I could make it up there to scam a seat in your boat.

My family is all from up there and I truly love that part of MN.

The fishing is starting to get really good again the fish have moved back out to the reefs and humps. I haven’t been able to get out since last week, but I have some buddies out catching limits after work until dark. About ready to trade the kids in for a new dog so I don’t have to run around as much after school.
