Weekend Action on Pokegama

Was able to get out on Pokegama three day last week. Thursday and Friday after work didn’t give me much time to try and locate any fish but was able to find some fish on Friday. However, had a really tough time getting them to bite, I tried rigging and spinning with crawlers and leeches with no takers. Wish I had and extra rod in the boat to see what they wanted and I spent a lot of time switching between rods and rigs.

With the full moon approaching this week I thought I would try trolling cranks on Friday and managed three walleyes in about an hour and a half before calling it a night. The all the fish were caught on the first 5 passes in about 30 minutes so the last hour was pretty dull.

Saturday I took out a group of four looking for some panfish action. The first spot we moved twice and finally got on some nice gills, several fish were over 9″ inches and few 10″. Rain pushed us to move to a second spot on the north side of the lake where I had found some fish the night before. We were fishing in 12 to 22 FOW water and the gills were stacked from 8 Ft down to the bottom. Every drop over the boat pulled in a gill for the next two hours. Again caught some really nice fish deeper down if you could get by the top layer of little ones.

Next we tried for northers using spoons and Blue Fox Spinners. Picked up two nice eater pike in about 20 minutes trolling in 12 to 15 FOW. It was the first northern ever for one of the guys so it was good day on the water.

Also, I heard the walleye bite on Trout Lake is red hot right now and trying to figure out how to make time in my schedule to go over their and check it out. May have to send some of my scouts out to take a look and let you know if its true or not.

We were able to get the walleyes to bite – at 8:30-10:30PM on the first break, trolling shad raps. The key was to use 6lb fireline. Mono did not allow the bait to get to the right depth. The sun had to go down for them to bite. If you were getting weeds, you were too deep…

It was steady – in front of the golf course down to drumbeater island – following the break.

    Biggest was 22 inches…

The topwater smallmouth bite was good from about 5:30 AM to 7:00 AM over cabbage beds around Nesbitt and Drumbeater Islands.

What a great lake!!! It was also interesting to see the big tullibee floating – must have had some Oxygen depletion due to the warm July. IF you saw the gulls – there were ususally floaters amongst them.

Have you ever fished Pit Lake? The Pit that is across the street from the access up Tioga Beach Road.

That looked like a fun lake with stocked trout in it?

Sounds like you got some great fishing in last week, I am going to try really hard to get out this week for the night bite being full moon week. I like trolling around the islands and usually do pretty well if I can get the right color combination. Right now I notice the fish have been from 9 to 18 FOW water just like you said right over the top of the weeds, if you get weeds your are too deep and if you don’t have the right amount of line out you are too shallow. I can’t wait till the water starts to really cool at night as that is when I do the best.

I fished the Tioga pit many decades ago. We actually camped there and sat on the show waiting for rainbows to come by and grab our crawlers.

I saw one of the biggest bass I ever saw at the time caught out of Cavanaugh which I think is the lake they used to pump water into from out of the mine when it was in operation.

I have heard some really good things about fishing the Tioga pit. I guess every spring they stalk the pit with Rainbow Brood stalk, this year the story is a guy caught a 29″ rainbow. The lake doesn’t get a lot of fishing pressure. Someday I will find the time to get out there and give it a try.

So many lakes so little time…

29″! That would have been something. Back then we only caught eater sized ones. I think we caught 1 every hour or 2. I was young, so I was soon distracted by the rock bass I could catch when I moved over to the rocky area.

Like I said its just the story I heard, other than than I know they cath a lot of nice eater fish especially when the brood is stocked. Sounds like a lot of fun hope to get out there yet this fall.

I wasn’t doubting that there was a 29″ caught. I know they stock the thing every year and there is just rock bass and suckers in there with them. I have no problem believing there are some big ones in there.

I have a hard time believing the story, that is a huge rainbow for this area. I definitely would have liked to see a picture of this fish. For some reason I thought there was some sunfish in there as well, but I really don’t know much about the lake other than they stalk the trout. I also have heard they have some brown trout in there as well.

Oh, its more you that isn’t sure you believe it. I guess 29″ is a bit crazy now that I think about it.

I wouldn’t doubt there are sunfish in there now. People are real good at stealth stocking.

Yes, lol stealth stocking it must have been an old craze.

Now I am positive that the law abiding citizens wouldn’t try to transfer for a new species into a lake or pond. The fear of losing all your worldly possessions and your first born child kind of deters people.

29″ Rainbow trout is rather larger anywhere you go, just would like to see a picture if that is case.

LOL, but they could have their child do it without fear of anything until he actually dropped them in the lake!
