Gills on Pokegama

I haven’t had much time to fish as of lately, but have been able to make it out for a little family fun fishing bluegills. On Sunday it took us a little while to find them but were able to put 42 in the live well in just under an hour. 11 gills were between 7 1/2 and 8 1/4 inches, not monsters but nice fish. Had a nice fish fry for 8 of us yesterday evening.

We were using feathered jigs tipped with just about anything. Out of curiousity I tried fishing with no bait or plastics and was still able to catch them. They were definately hungry yesterday.

Other reports on bluegill fishing around the lake is about the same on once you find the fish they are hungry. Look along the shoreline by the golf course, sherry’s arm, in tioga bay, or under the causeway by Zorbaz for your best chances.

A few reports of anglers starting to catch the crappies, more on this later this week as my plan is to get one evening to target them.

The walleye day bite has been pretty slow but have heard of a few fisherman picking up some BIG ‘Eyes down rigging for lake trout. With the full moon last week a lot of anglers were out fishing under the stars and doing really well for ‘eyes around the islands and shorelines. Unfortunately due to other obligations I missed out on another full moon bite but hope to catch the tail end of that sometime this week.

Thanks for the report. We are hitting that on Thursday in 2 weeks on our way up to the cabin near Marcell. Maybe we can get some gills to eat on our first day.

Also thanks for the heads up on Zorbaz. I haven’t been to one in many years and I had no idea there was one up there.

If you are up by Marcell swing over to Wabana and try for some Panfish and Walleyes, a buddy of mine lives on the lake and he has been hammering the Bluegills in the deepwater 17 to 20 ft. He will pick up a walleye or two fishing for bluegills as well.

There are a lot of good gill lakes up in that area, including the one we will be on….I’ve already said too much!

I just wish my nephew was going up so we could bass fish. We have our eye on one lake in particular. No offense, but now I’ll be fishing only for walleye unless I wake up early and steal one of my brother’s boats. If they pull out the ATV jokes, it will happen.

I sure hope they turn on. We normally go to Elephant by Orr, well I should say they do because last year was my first trip, and it was surprisingly a bust. Their worst year.

I will let you know if I hear of anything, but I usually don’t get up in that neck of the woods until the lakes freeze up. I know they have been getting some nice gills on Lawrence Lake and few other small ones in the area, but everyone usually keeps the walleye bite up there pretty hush hush. I am planning to go for Lake Trout on Caribou this weekend, maybe I will hear of something worth while and pass it along.

Thanks! Good luck trout fishing. My nephew and I have been saying we are going to ice fish for them, but have yet to make it up there.
