Grand Marais

I am heading up to Grand Marais in a few days and am bringing my kayak. I am not a good walleye fisherman at all, and am looking to change that. I was wandering if there are any lakes around there with good numbers of walleyes that I can catch without using a gps system. And preferably a smaller lake or one with lots of bays so I don’t get blown around the lake. And are the fish in the harbor catchable?
P.S- I will be busy packing up, so I don’t know if I will get to responding, but responses are appreciated.

    – Thank You

I can’t answer to the inland lakes part of this but if you cast a 1/4 ounce gold/orange Krocodile lure or 2/5 ounce Little Cleo in the same color pattern in the harbor you may find a coho or two swinging thru. A Lake Trout is a fair possibility as is a Herring. A number 3 Mepps with plain hooks in gold and having the orange or red hook tubing is another good option. All of these in silver/blue would be great second choices too.

Best walleye lakes the size you’re looking for near town are Elbow, Ball Club, Two Island and either Twin Lake. All are fairly shallow and secluded and have decent maps with the DNR and Navionics. Fair chance of seeing a moose if you go to Ball Club, had one swim right by us while we were anchored on a rock pile about 10 years ago.

Tom has you covered for the harbor fishing, Buck’s Hardware or the Beaver House will help with questions, too. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you, in the past the fish in the harbor just seem to swim around me, like their making fun of my poor efforts. I will try this though. Thanks again

If you are seeing fish on a flasher try dropping that Krocodile or Cleo down and vertical jig it while slowly moving. Don’t be afraid to fish down deep doing this as trout will rest right at the bottom and can show up as an anomaly of the bottom but they rise up and smack a bait too.

    Thank you,

Yes, I have a Garmin with the basic 2d graph. I will make sure to attach that on to my kayak before I go.
