Lowrance Elite 5 / Lakemaster Compatibility

    Howdy,

I’m looking at upgrading my depth finder/GPS situation (X-65 and an H2OC). I currently have a MN Lakemaster chip and the Lakemaster Rainy Lake-LOTW chips. I believe both of these are SD cards…they’re 7/8″ by 1 1/4″. Since my Lakemaster chips are for Lowrance, that dictates what my next machine would be.

I looked at the HDS 5 and it looks like a nice unit, except I’m reluctant to shell out a lot of money for functionality I don’t care about; specifically the networking, radar, Sirrus radio, etc. Then I looked at the Elite 5. It’s less expensive, has the same number of pixels as the HDS-5 and is very comparable. However….if I’m reading the specs right, it only takes MICRO SD CARDS?

Can the new Lowrance unit be INCOMPATIBLE with both of my Lakemaster cards????? Please tell me I read this wrong….

The Elite 5 uses Micro SD cards, so your current cards won’t fit. The new cards are available in micro SD.

If my memory is correct, all the newer units are going to the smaller Micro cards.

Unbelievable. OK, I guess I stick with the old stuff. Lowrance just lost another sale.

Just put a HDS 5 on my boat my 2006 and 2007 chips work just fine. My new Lakemasters going back to the store, Navionics are better IMO.

That’s true, it’s the less expensive Elite 5 that I was interested in and the SD cards apparently won’t work there.

The HDS 5 is an amazing unit, not sure why the Elite wouldnt take the SD cards.

The Elite 5 does take cards, but they take Micro SD cards, which are much smaller than the standard SD cards that Lakemaster/Navionics had put out for the last few years. The cards just won’t fit. The new ones come in Micro format, with an adapter to fit standard SD slots, but you can’t make the old cards smaller.

Just sell the old card for $75 and buy a new one.

I was at Cabelas in Owatonna on Sunday and the had 3 HDS5’s in the bargain cave. I believe they were around $450 and have factory warranty. For that price there is no reason not to buy one.
