GPS Question

I have a handheld GPS, a Garmin Dakota 20. It is no longer under warranty. When trying to turn it on, if it comes on at all, it will shut down immediately. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it worth my while to send the device in for repairs, or should I just get a new GPS? Any suggestions for an electronically challenged individual? Thanks!!

My first suggestion is to check for software updates. Second is to call them and send it in. I’ve had a good experience with the garmin returns dept.

Your symptoms sound like a faulty/damaged power/usb cable connection. My Colorado has a similar issue but is operable so I just continue to use it.

It sounds too simple, but have you tried it with fresh batteries? My Lowrance handheld acts similar to your description when the batteries are weak.

I would say try with fresh batteries also. Other wise call Garmin and see what they have to say. At the very least, you might get a credit towards a new unit.

Dan and I would lose our man card now if we admitted that was the issue. We passed the point of no return. It time to take it apart.

Thanks for the replies. (Yes, I have tried fresh batteries. LOL) Anyway, I have info to call and it seems that no one is saying that it is not worthwhile, so I’ll probably give them a call next week. Do you guys know if the unit has to be powered up to accept any updates? My unit simply will not do this.

It doesn’t need to be powered up because when you connect the usb cable it will turn on automatically. If it doesn’t, you have a problem.

If it does you’ll have to download the update software to your computer from Garmin. Should be pretty simple.

If you end up sending it in, I dont think they will charge you for looking at it.
