Glad I moved from that place 30 years ago.

Uber, Lyft say they’ll leave May 1 after Minneapolis City Council overrides Frey veto
Uber said it will leave the entire metro, including the airport. Lyft said it would cease operations in Minneapolis May 1, when the ordinance takes effect.

That socialist city council is pretty good at giving people reasons not to come there! Almost like it’s their goal…

Yep. Part of the democratic socialist plan is for government to control transportation.

I did a double take this morning.. skipping through channels, one of the MPR stations was talking about this.. they said Lyft, Uber, Door Dash are flawed business’… they had a time and place during the pandemic, but now they are not sustainable as they are. When you hear MPR saying something, you know which party is backing it. coffee

Outside of the concerts that the wife keeps buying tickets for, and the airport…we pretty much continue to steer clear of the entire metro area as we have for years. We’ve started debating flying out of Rochester or Eau Claire too due to no lines, parking costs, and substantially fewer people even if it costs more.

There’s quite the group of crazies running MPLS and many of the surrounding areas.

You fixed it! I was going to say it’s much more than that city. They’re screwing up the whole state now.

Well I’m glad the people who won’t go to Minneapolis anyways have something to complain about but this is basic negotiating tactic and, if they leave at all, it won’t be for long. Uber & Lyft pay drivers more in many cities where they still operate. They’re just hoping the city backs down or the state overrides it somehow.

They also get paid less in many states reef. And where they do pay them more the median income of riders is higher than here.

I don’t like government stepping on free market systems, if the drivers don’t like it get another job. Not sure how much they expect to make with only the skills of operating a normal vehicle.

You’re right, why should I complain? I make it into Mpls about 3 times a year and have been in 2 Uber cars in my life. But, the same type of democratic socialists running that city are taking hold in state government and it’s only going to get worse unless people start voting differently. But, clearly a lot of people have no issue with it.

I figure if you have an Uber or Lyft in your town its too metro and liberal for me. Can’t get a ride take the lawnmower into town then. I cant figure out why everyone bitches at my place of employment because we charge a credit card fee, but they pay a 200% markup for some doordashed food.

Send a message to your STATE rep and senator NOW.

This is NOT just about rideshare services. This is about establishing a hierarchy and primacy of laws and legislation so that lower-level branches of government like the Minneapolis City Council cannot pass legislation that has impacts outside of Minneapolis’ jurisdiction.

This issue has been brewing for a long time. We saw this with the smoking ban, we saw it with pot legislation, and we’ve seen it many other times before. Local branches of government are making all Minnesota citizens their de facto constituents by passing laws that have a knock-on effect in the rest of MN even though they have no jurisdiction there and the people there do not elect them.

The minimum wage is a great example of an area where ONLY the MN legislature should be able to legislate and change. If Minneapolis wants to increase the minimum wage inside of their city, then they should have to do it through the state legislature, NOT by simply going it alone and in the process legislating for all of MN.

A minimum wage increase will likely cripple most small businesses which is what the government wants because they dont get much tax revenue from them in the first place.

Hey BuckyBadger – I fly strictly out of Rochester, whether business or pleasure. Parking is cheaper, there is no wait, and planes always on time. Within 5 minutes of walking in the door, checking in bags, going through the security has NEVER taken more than 5 minutes.
Many times the flights are cheaper to your final destination too! The secret is out!! )

This isn’t really true. Most minimum wage increases have exemptions for small businesses.

And actually Minnesota gets a huge amount of tax revenue from small businesses because a) unlike many giant corporations, we small businesses actually PAY taxes and b) many small businesses are simply sole proprietor one person businesses and can’t avoid paying tax because it’s essentially person income.

I flew out of both Rochester once and Eau Claire once, but it sounds like that is going to change whenever possible if your experiences are the same as my limited ones. Now hopefully more people respond about the MPLS City Council to bury this tidbit in the thread forever whistling

I think Bucky what the City Council did shows total incompetence. Maybe there are too many drivers and they are only hurting themselves?? I don’t know the answer but when you have an incompetent city council making irrational decisions for “out of their job scope (think also their stance they made on Israel also) they should not be dabbling in (free economy) – then EVERYONE ends up paying for their total ignorance.

It will cripple far more than that. Its been proven that raising the Minimum rates ends up hurting low income people more than helping them. The offset in price increases resulting from higher Minimum wages more than offsets the higher wage.

Im in the hood, most taxi drivers I’ve been with were white, can’t think of an uber ride where the driver didn’t have a Muslim type name, I’m terrible w nationalities of that type so best I can do for reference, all very nice English speaking folks. Get rides for my 15 daughter as well more times than I want bc of schedules and never had issues.

As far as commercial airlines flying out of Eau Claire there are only 2 or 3 flights per week and all of these flights go to (wait for it)……Minneapolis. Might be a couple of junket flights to Florida and Vegas.

I haven’t been to The Cities since the George Floyd episode except to use the airport.

Do the socialism hating wagon pullers ( lol ) here know they’re disproportionally paying for public assistance of these drivers vs other workers in Minnesota while Uber made a billion dollars last year?

On another note they’re all independent contractors who mostly use multiple apps at the same time already. Uber and Lyft leaving just gives that business to whichever other ones want to open there and catch on…

    https://driveempower.com/press-release-2/minnesota-empower-is-coming-soon/

While we don’t believe Uber and Lyft will actually leave and let drivers work for themselves without a fight, Empower will make its software and services available to drivers in the Twin Cities on or before May 1, 2024,” said Joshua Sear, CEO of Empower

Wridz is another established one already operating in several cities.

Not positive I ever worked for minimum wage, but if I did, it would’ve been around 1989. Problem with those that want to always raise it, they say it should be a “living wage”. Minimum wage will never be a living wage for the reasons fishthumper stated. Never.
