I understand there concerns with pay. The basis of there argument is inflation.

The part I don’t understand is they want a promise of no AI in the ports. To me that just seams silly. With the direction the world is going with AI the leader in it is going to sit at the head of the table on the world stage.

They were offered a 50% pay increase over the next 6(?) years and declined it.

Don’t know about you guys, but it seems like a GREAT offer to me?? I’d take that raise in a heartbeat lol

Ya that’s pretty good, 8.3% each year seems reasonable to me too. I’m not in that business nor do I know their reasons for declining it though.

A six year deal right now would almost certainly be a poor deal. There are currently no indicators showing improvement in the U.S. economy, and the global instability makes a recovery in that period less likely.
6 years from now, these workers could be worse off than they are now, even with a 50% increase. I would guess their last contract was also longer term, I can’t imagine feeling good about their current wages if the last contract was signed in 2018.

Media is saying this strike could really effect recovery efforts in North Carolina, Tennessee, etc. They also said it could effect the election with people out of power, roads out, etc.

The title “Got TP” was simply a metaphor for an anticipated supply chain stoppage. coffee

    Just searched for anticipated shortages.

Not sure how you can stock up on bananas, but we can do our part in getting Scotch and Irish whiskeys and German beers.

Mrs. Bucky is about to turn into a villain. Some of the earliest impacts could be deadly if shortages arise:

    Imported wines
    Chocolate
    Coffee

Meeting with a union rep Thursday morning, hope there’s enough support in our factory to get one in. Be nice to bargain for a higher wage. Good for them, I hope they get all they’re asking for

Yeah, it’s not that easy. What about health medical dental pension. 50 percent increase from crap wages to still crap wages is not great if all those other things are not aligning good.

Considering—due to my vast knowledge of stuff from using googles and typing words—the average annual inflation rate hovers between 2.5-3.5%, I’d have to agree. That sounds like a good deal. Lol.

I haven’t read into it, but could part of the workers’ reason for striking be more about working conditions/mgmt/treatment rather than just money?

Genuinely not sure and pretty uninformed on the topic.

Edit to clarify: I’d probably deal with some more BS for a lot more money…

I still think the average consumer will be most significantly impacted by panic…rather than the supply chain effects of the situation.

Johnny down the street telling anyone and everyone to run to the store for this or that as it will all be gone, while sharing similar junk on social media ends up being more dangerous than just everyone continuing to purchase/use goods as normal while the process unfolds.

“That top-tier hourly wage of $39 amounts to just over $81,000 annually, but dockworkers can make significantly more by taking on extra shifts. For example, according to a 2019-20 annual report from the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, about one-third of local longshoremen made $200,000 or more a year. A more typical longshoreman’s salary can exceed $100,000, but not without logging substantial overtime hours. Daggett, the ILA president, maintains that these higher earners work up to 100 hours a week.”

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-much-do-dock-workers-make-longshoreman-salary/

Harold Daggett is the President of the ILA and here’s some more info on him

“In 2005, the U.S. Justice Department accused Daggett of being an “associate” of the Genovese crime family. He was charged with racketeering in 2005 and acquitted in two cases.

    Harold Daggett’s Net Worth
Exactly how much Daggett is worth is not known. However, according to a report by Politico, he was paid a $728,000 salary by the ILA in 2023, as well as $173,000 from 1804-1.

Fox Business said that Daggett owns a 76-foot yacht, the Obsession, and has been seen riding in a Bentley.”

A $100k salary in most of the East Coast cities and surrounding areas affords similar purchasing power to someone living in rural areas of the Midwest making $45-50k per year.

***To reiterate, I don’t pretend to know what the “right” salary is or the tasks and hours associated with these jobs…just a reference point when people start throwing out hourly wages or salary figures and then somehow determine what is or is not enough and take a hard stand on it.

RE: TP shortage. I installed a bidet a few years ago and man is that a game changer. Can’t believe I lived this long without one. Essentially the equivalent to taking a shower after a #2. Plus its cheaper as I buy a fraction of the TP I used to and its better for your septic system.

If you think about it, is there anywhere else on your body that if you got sh*t on it, you’d just smear it with some paper until its not streaky anymore and call it good?

Honest off-topic question, do you just dry off with a bath towel, then? Never really understood those things, but I can see how it’s better for your septic.

Its a great question and it varies. My understanding is SOP overseas is to have dedicated towels for “drying off”. My preference is to use a couple squares of TP to dry off rather than a dedicated towel. Even with still using TP to dry off, I use < 10% of the TP I used to.

    Never really understood those things

Think of it like rinsing off your hands, but for your behind rather than smearing it with paper until its no longer streaky.

Serious question also, if its like rinsing off your your hands, you just run low pressure water over the poo and then wipe dry ? I think when I rinse my hands, they are rubbed together to free up the debris…? Do you just hit with water and wipe ? Confused… I have never used one… but they do make man wipes for clean up.

Imagine you’re barefoot in your yard and you step in a pile of dog poop. The traditional wiping method is smearing it around with TP until its not streaky anymore and call it good. Using a bidet is like using a pressure washer to wash off your foot, then you pat it dry with TP after. Much cleaner end result.

OK – so you still use TP, but not as much and just to dry up – GOT IT! rotflol
