Couldn’t be happier! $66 to dip the scope and mounts and included return shipping. The finish is flawless and RA did a great job of keeping the camo off the turrets and optics.

Side note – I initially thought I sent the scope to the wrong address and USPS had returned the package to me as undeliverable. I sent it off on a Monday and had it back on Wednesday of the same week. That’s fast!

I just now found time to do a test mount to check eye relief and thought I’d share a few pics.

That thing looks awesome. If it shoots half as good as it looks you will have no issues taking an Elk!!

My hope is I get to a place where I can shoot half as good as the gun is capable of shooting. I know I’m the weakest link in the chain right now given I’m woefully out of practice.

Got my scope back this weekend too… Back into the bridge of my nose, I doubt we share the same excitement.

Ouch. Definitely the other side of the spectrum.

Sorry to hear it. Hope you’ll mend quick.

Looks very nice James. On the other hand, I found out last week that my BSA scope turned to goo.

That looks very nice. If looks could kill, the elk would be freezer wrapped already.

Since you are mounting the scope this seems as good a place as any to mention something that I think is often overlooked–set up the reticle focus. This is the first thing that should be done. I do it before I even set up the scope for eye relief in the rings, I first set the reticle focus. Then set relief and mount. Reticle focus is an individual setting, no two of us will require the exact same setting, that’s why it’s there.

I am constantly amazed at the numbers of hunters/shooters who have no idea how to do this on a new scope and, indeed, did not even know how or why it had to be done. I’ve looked through any number of scopes owned by others and found the reticle focus screwed all the way down as it had obviously never been touched since the scope came out of the box.

Also, I am a big fan of Loctite blue for all screws on the base and rings.

For the clearest focus to my eyes I have the adjustment backed out almost 3 full turns. Takes the image from “workable but soft” to “tack sharp.” It did add about 1/8 of an inch of length to the eye piece end of the scope but I have more than enough room to make up for that in the mounts to get the eye relief where I needed it.

Keep the tips coming. This is my first rifle and although I’ve immersed myself in research to build a basic working knowledge I’m bound to overlook something eventually.

    Sweet looking set up

I’ll be in Colorado and Wyoming next week putting a dent in the Pdog population. Perfect way to keep the trigger finger in shape. Let me know if you need to take a ride over and join us

Are you going to load for this cartridge or just do factory fodder?

That sucks donkey dung. I have 3 days of work and 11 days to play on this trip.

Hhhmmm, an IDO Episode of pdogs absorbing 55gr hollow point @ 4000fps…exploding like a watermelon…and a shower of guts, blood, and pieces. Probably still to morbid for most

Are you going to load for this cartridge or just do factory fodder?

I went into the purchase open to the idea of getting into reloading to fine tune the accuracy of the rifle if needed as some reviews I read mentioned that the Kimbers were picky when it came to ammo.

To date I’ve shot Hornady, Nosler, and Remington 280 ammo so far (FYI – you can use regular 280 ammo in the 280 AI w/o issue although I’ve found it to be the least accurate of the three).

Based on what I’ve experienced so far at the range 150 grain Nosler AB’s shoot so well I really don’t know what could be reasonably gained – outside of any enjoyment or satisfaction I might feel from the hand loading. I’m seeing very good consistency and some very tight groups.

Here’s my final target from my first day at the range. One of the biggest things I’ve experienced that has affected accuracy so far is the impact point changing once the barrel gets hot. The barrel on my rifle is very thin to reduce weight and it doesn’t take more than 6 – 8 rounds in quick succession for it to get HOT and once that happens the accuracy falls off a bit with the point of impact always coming up a bit low. Or maybe my shooting skills fall apart. Either way…

Case in point, the center target was a fairly quick succession of 5 rounds at 100 yards through an already warm barrel. The first three were consistent at the top of the bullseye while the last two rounds hit a bit low. At the end of my 5th shot… the barrel was very HOT! I’ve seen this scenario repeated when I try to speed through too many rounds in too short a time period.

After I let the barrel cool I gave it a quick clean and put another 3 rounds through it, this time waiting about 1 – 1.5 minutes between rounds. You can see the results top-left at the tip of my pointing finger.

At this point my plan is to keep focusing on form and just getting very comfortable and familiar with the rifle and scope before I start pushing the distances. The range I’ve been shooting at is limited to 200 yards so I’ll practice at 100 – 200 yards until I feel I’m ready to stretch things a bit. I think another trip or two to the range and I should be in a good place.

So, to respond directly to your question, I’m not saying I’ve ruled out hand loading completely but for the time being I’m in brass collection mode. grin
