The Bass fishing on my favorite East Metro Bass lake has been good all summer, up to last weekend. I had one of those days where I couldn’t land a fish. I’d get a big swirl, set the hook, nothing there. Or I’d have one on for 30 seconds and then they’d throw the hook. Very frustrating and had me second-guessing myself.

This morning was a lot better, I went 6 for 6 and all them absolutely hammered the fly. The biggest fish was right at 20 inches and when he hit the topwater he came out of the water with it, did a cartwheel and went back in head first. That was fun!

I guess some days they hit it weird and there’s not much you can do about it.

Water temp was 75, most of the fish were out over 6-8 feet of water next to weed points.

Sounds like great fun. Do you tie a weed guard on the hair bugs or go without?

I usually go without. It seems as though any weed guard that truly makes the fly weedless also gets in the way of hook sets too. I used to tie in a loop of mono, but that wasn’t as effective as I would have hoped.

I typically concentrate my efforts towards edges and holes, so I’m fishing through fairly open water anyway. If I do need to throw up into the schlump or into pads, I use a different bug. Basically it’s a Deer hair diver tied upside down on a streamer hook with saddle hackles for the tail. This makes the hook ride point up, like a spinner bait, and it comes through the heavy stuff pretty well.
